Recently, Cardi B sparked online conversation after commenting on her new collection’s rapid sellout in 3X sizes. During a livestream, it was revealed that Cardi B plus size customers “sold out” the styles in 30 minutes. While joking in her usual playful tone, she referred to them as “fat f****” and made remarks about them skipping Chick-fil-A. Some fans laughed it off, others took offense, and TikTok quickly became a split screen of reactions. Clips of her livestream were reposted across platforms, racking up millions of views in a matter of hours. Entire comment sections turned into debates about intent versus impact, showing how quickly one viral moment can turn into a cultural talking point.
This isn’t just about one comment—it’s about the value, treatment, and perception of the plus size market. In a previous article, I explored how plus size shoppers are among fashion’s most loyal and lucrative demographics. According to Plunkett Research, the global plus size clothing market was valued at over $194 billion in 2022.
That number doesn’t even include the massive secondary market for resale, styling services, and influencer-led product promotions, which are also heavily fueled by plus size consumers. Cardi B’s plus size shoppers, in particular, are proving they have both the desire and the spending power to sell out items in minutes. They are the kind of customers brands dream of—ones who buy quickly, promote products organically, and come back for more.
Still, the issue lies in how that loyalty is met—or undermined—by commentary. Cardi B is known for her raw honesty and her ability to connect with people across backgrounds. That relatability is a major reason her Cardi B plus size customers support her so passionately. She’s built a brand on speaking without a filter, which can make her feel like a best friend to fans, but it also means moments like this can be magnified in ways she might not expect.
Even well-meaning jokes can land differently when directed at a community that has historically faced public ridicule and exclusion in fashion. For people who have been mocked for their size since childhood, a casual jab—no matter how playful—can feel like reopening an old wound.
Contrary to outdated stereotypes, plus size women are not lazy, unhealthy, or financially incapable. They are consumers who deserve respect—both for their humanity and their economic influence. They are business owners, creatives, executives, parents, and style leaders in their communities. Businesses, including major fashion brands, have sabotaged their own growth by letting ego or bias get in the way of inclusivity. They underestimate the power of word-of-mouth within the plus size community, where a single negative experience can deter hundreds of potential buyers.
The Cardi B Plus Size Moment Had Mixed Reactions
The Cardi B plus size moment is a reminder that jokes carry weight, especially when they target the very communities driving sales. For celebrities and brands alike, moments like these can either strengthen the bond with loyal customers or fracture it entirely.
To be fair, not every Cardi B plus size shopper was offended. Some expressed online that they found her comments funny and understood the playful intent. In fact, a few even said that her brash humor is part of what makes them love her brand more. That perspective is just as valid as those who felt hurt, because how we experience comments about our bodies is deeply personal and individualized. Both reactions matter because they speak to the wide spectrum of plus size experiences and identities.
What’s important is that the conversation doesn’t reinforce harmful myths—that being plus size means being unworthy, unlovable, or incapable of building wealth. The goal should be to keep the door open for plus size consumers to see themselves as celebrated, not caricatured.

At her core, Cardi B represents a multifaceted womanhood that many can relate to—messy, triumphant, resilient, and unapologetically herself. That’s what makes the Cardi B plus size conversation worth examining: it’s not about canceling anyone, but about highlighting the serious dollar value of inclusion. Fashion, like any industry, thrives when it understands and invests in its customers. In a world where money is green, and loyalty is priceless, the fashion industry—and all of us—would do well to mind the communities that keep the shelves empty and the registers full.
Because when you honor those customers with genuine respect and intentional representation, you don’t just sell clothes—you build trust, longevity, and a cultural footprint that can’t be faked or bought.
Editor’s Note & Update
In response to the controversy surrounding Cardi B’s plus size comments, plus size acvtivist and influencer, Samyra made a three TikToks. In the videos she criticized Cardi’s comments and reaction to having plus size fans. In a different video, she critiqued the music industry for their lack of inclusivity in merch. In the third video, she suggested different books that address fatphobia in an educational way.
It is unclear which video Cardi responded too, but she left a comment stating, “Girl people make fun of my bbl everyday… I was talkin to my fans who was makin fun of the same thing … Like it’s not that serious”
Samyra rebutted, stating that it is that serious, and that people making fun of Cardi B’s BBL is a result of her not demanding respect, something she will not fall victim to. This seemingly set Cardi off as she responded telling the influencer to “shut the f**k up.” You can view the time line of videos below:
@samyra Like why was you ever making fun of fat people??

@samyra It’s not that hard to not be fatphobic and it’s not that hard to have Plus-Size merch.
