Chocolate maker Whittaker’s has won the Supreme Award in the Wellington Gold Awards, with Chief Marketing Officer Jane Anthony accepting the brand’s Global Gold award earlier.

Chocolate maker Whittaker’s has clinched the Supreme Award in the Wellington Gold Awards of 2022.

The family-owned company has been making sweet treats for more than a century since it was founded by James Henry Whittaker in 1896.

Based in Porirua, J H Whittaker and Sons has been named as New Zealand’s most trusted brand for 11 straight years, with its products reaching far corners of the world including Hong Kong, the Middle East and Kenya.

Since it started making the famous peanut slab in the 1950s, Whittaker’s has collaborated with other Kiwi companies to create numerous innovative new flavours.

More than 800 people were at the awards ceremony on Thursday night at the TSB Arena, which was held in association with The Dominion Post to recognise businesses in the Wellington Region.

“The Gold Awards are a chance to celebrate the extraordinary creativity and entrepreneurial spirit in the Wellington region,” said Anna Fifield, editor of The Dominion Post.

Wellington-based motorcycle maker FTN Motion’s founders Luke Sinclair and Kendall Bristow received the award for their locally developed electric moped, Streetdog.

Other winners include the Ika Rere (flying fish), the electric passenger ferry carrying passengers across Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Both its builder, the Wellington Electric Boat Company (WEBBCO), and operator East by West Ferries won the Innovation and Green categories respectively.

Property developer and philanthropist Mark Dunajtschik was honoured with a special Tribute to a Wellington Icon. Dunajtschik announced at the event that he and his life and business partner Dorothy Spotswood would contribute up to $50 million for new mental health unit in Lower Hutt.
