Taylor Dukes’ Favorite Non-Toxic and Clean Baby Products
The only thing that fires me up more than talking about wellness is talking about motherhood – being a mom and raising sons alongside my husband, Ryan, is my greatest joy.
My journey into motherhood deepened my commitment to creating a toxin-conscious home and selecting products that support the health of the whole family. Through personal experience and professional expertise, I want to help you navigate the overwhelming world of baby products.
Today I’ll share some of my favorite items and practical guidance on curating all of your essential clean baby products – so you can feel confident and informed as you prepare for one of life’s most meaningful chapters.
P.S. I know so many moms, moms-to-be, and hopeful moms-to-be are looking for guidance on what to do for your health and baby’s health, which is why I compiled all my clinical wisdom into this Ultimate Prenatal, Pregnancy & Postpartum Guide – a 60+ page motherhood companion guide with comprehensive and full-scope support, including functional medicine protocols.
Our Little Ones Deserve the Purest Start
As a functional medicine nurse practitioner and a mom, I believe choosing clean and non-toxic products for baby isn’t just trendy – it’s a priority.
From the diapers we use to the food we serve and even the paint on the nursery walls, every product can impact a baby’s health and development. Over time, I’ve vetted and tried hundreds of brands. And only a handful have become staples in our home – products I trust, use, and truly believe in.
Here’s a breakdown of my favorite clean, non-toxic baby products across fundamental categories. I’ve also included discount codes where available to make these conscious choices more accessible to you!
Cleaning & Home Environment
Start here. Trust me, I know it might feel weird to start with paint, air purification, and cleaning products, but these are paramount decisions when you consider that your baby will spend most of their early life hours breathing the air inside your home, and specifically in their nursery.
Naturally, we want to ensure the air and environment is as clean and pure as possible, and here’s how:
Branch Basics
Toss your toxic cleaning products, which release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds aka bad chemicals) into the air. Go with Branch Basics’s game-changing non-toxic cleaning concentrate instead. One solution can easily be diluted to clean anything – from toys and high chairs to bathroom counters. It’s plant-based, fragrance-free, and completely safe to use around babies. It’s the only thing I use to clean my entire home.
Canopy Humidifier
Unlike traditional humidifiers, Canopy is mold-inhibiting and uses paper filters, making it safer and cleaner. It’s perfect for keeping the air in our nursery hydrated – especially during dry winter months or when baby has a stuffy nose. Bonus: It’s also aesthetically minimal and quiet.
ECOS Paints Nursery Paint
Traditional paints also release harmful VOCs, which linger in the air long after the nursery is painted. ECOS offers a low-VOC, non-toxic alternative that doesn’t compromise on quality or color. We used this in our nursery, and I felt confident knowing it was safe for baby from day one.
Austin Air Purifier
I’ve tried and/or researched all of them – and finally landed on the Austin Air. With a 5 year filter life and hard research (in hospitals!) to back up its efficacy, I couldn’t be happier with the Austin Air. We keep one in every bedroom at my home, and that’s exactly where I suggest you start. Baby will spend most of their time sleeping, so we want the air purifier wherever baby sleeps.
Bathing & Baby Care Essentials
What you put on your baby; creams, lotions, oils, even diapers and pajamas, can ultimately be absorbed through your baby’s skin into their body, for better or for worse. This is why the quality and purity of the products you choose are incredibly important.
For the best in purity and efficacy, here are my go-to baby care items:
Primally Pure
Their entire baby line is hands down my favorite. The Baby Balm is thick, nourishing, and rich. Perfect for any chapped baby skin or rashes– soothing for even the most sensitive skin.
Carina Organics Unscented Body Wash & Shampoo
I love a good 2-in-1. This unscented body wash and shampoo are incredibly gentle on baby’s skin with ultra clean ingredients. I’ve used it for years with both of my boys – through toddler years and even beyond.
Canopy Baby Bath Tub Filter
An essential for fighting things like eczema, dry skin, and irritation – which is so commonly seen when bathing with tap water. Bonus that it’s easy to install, doubles as a spout cover, and includes a temperature indicator.
Coterie Diapers
Without a doubt the best clean diapers I’ve tried. Free from dyes, fragrance, and other irritants, Coterie diapers are ultra-absorbent and super gentle on sensitive skin. You’ll likely notice less irritation and fewer blowouts after making the switch.
Dreamland Baby
If your baby struggles with sleep (whose doesn’t at some point?), Dreamland Baby’s weighted sleep sacks can be a lifesaver. They provide gentle pressure to mimic a calming hug, promoting longer, deeper sleep. They’re a comforting solution we swore by.
Pajamas/Clothing
While I’m not loyal to one specific brand, I do want to mention that the material of baby’s clothing really does matter. That said, start with pajamas because that’s what your child will spend the most time wearing. Look for natural fabrics – I go for 100% GOTS certified organic cotton for all of my kiddos pajamas and any undershirts/onesies that fit snugly up to the skin.
Earth Mama
I truly love everything Earth Mama makes – from diaper balm to nipple cream. Their formulations are herbal-based, organic, and free from synthetic fragrances or preservatives. It’s one of the first brands I trusted when I became a mom.
Earthley
Earthley’s baby-safe remedies have been so helpful for providing safe but effective solutions to common baby symptoms – from teething tinctures to tummy-soothing balms. Everything is made with real, clean ingredients with total transparency.
Baby On-the-Go
Sadly, most car seats and conventional baby items such as strollers and travel cribs are treated with harsh chemicals that can irritate baby’s skin, eyes, and even lungs. The main focus when choosing things like car seats, strollers, or beyond is to ensure they are created with non-toxic materials that have not been treated with chemicals. Here are a few I love:
Nuna PIPA Car Seat
I appreciate Nuna’s commitment to creating flame retardant-free products. Their car seats are intuitive to use, have excellent safety ratings, and I feel great about knowing baby’s head isn’t rubbing against or breathing in flame retardant chemicals.
UPPABaby VISTA V2 Stroller
The adjustable handles are great for short or tall parents. There’s a huge storage basket under the seat. It comes with a bassinet as well as a toddler seat.
Guava’s Lotus Travel Crib
Low-VOC and certified GreenGuard Gold – one of the only portable play yards that is free of PVCs, lead, formaldehyde, mercury, arsenic, phthalates, or other dangerous chemicals.
Artipoppe carrier or the Ergobaby Omni 360 All Position
The Artipoppe is an investment, but I can personally vouch that it’s worth the hype. The Ergobaby is a more affordable alternative that is versatile and can grow with baby.
Nutrition: Breastfeeding & Formula
Whether you plan to breastfeed or formula feed your baby, I want you to feel informed, confident, and prepared.
Breastfeeding a baby is both hard work and incredibly sweet. It is an opportunity to bond with baby while providing them with the nutrition they need to grow and develop optimally. I am a huge proponent, and I encourage you to work with a lactation consultant to make the journey as smooth as possible. TSC also has a great blog post with tips.
While I do believe breastmilk is the most nutritionally superior option when it comes to feeding a baby, for different reasons, some mamas are not able to or choose not to go that route. Whether because of adoption, cancer, or a variety of mental or physical challenges, it is simply not possible for all. For that reason, I came up with a Formula Comparison Guide.
Whether breastfeeding or formula feeding, here are some of my favorite options for feeding baby:
NURSING
Nursing Pillow
The Snuggle Me Organic Feeding Pillow is my favorite organic pillow for nursing. Another slightly more budget-friendly option that provides a little more support is the My Brest Friend Nursing Posture Pillow with Organic Slipcover.
Spectra S1 Plus Electric Breast Pump and Haakaa Hand Pump
A pump is helpful for boosting milk supply (by pumping after a nursing session), allowing yourself the freedom to sneak away for a bit, or simply catching the letdown milk on the opposite side breast from where baby is feeding (IYKYK!). An electric pump will be more efficient at expressing milk, while the handheld Haakaa is better for collecting let down.
Evenflo Classic Glass Bottles
I’m a big fan of glass bottles to reduce baby’s exposure to plastics. You can start with the 4 oz, but then as the baby gets older, you may want to stock up on the 8 oz bottles.
Formula
For those who choose to formula feed their baby, my personal choice and recommendation would be to go with either a homemade Weston A. Price formula or Sammy’s Milk formula (Note that Sammy’s is not technically infant-approved, however I would personally use it for my baby if needed). Most formulas contain synthetic vitamins, seed oils, and other ingredients that don’t promote baby’s optimal health – but these are two options I can get behind.
Organic Formula Shop
This is a reliable place to purchase trusted European formulas like Holle, HiPP, and others – if that’s the route you choose. They ship quickly and are super responsive.
Baby Feeding
Solids! You will find yourself preparing for your baby’s first solids and wondering how you blinked and arrived at this stage.
For the most part, I suggest feeding baby exactly what you feed yourself – nutrient-dense, real food. Most items can be pureed, cooked until super tender, or chopped into small enough pieces that are safe for baby. Whether you choose Baby-Led Weaning, purees, or some combination of the two, I can’t encourage you enough to simply focus on real, whole foods.
That said, here are some of my favorite products for feeding baby as well as a few convenient food options for when you’re traveling or in a time crunch:
Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair
This high chair is an investment that will grow with the baby from six months up through the time your child is ready to sit in an adult seat. For an economical and easy-to-clean option, look at Ikea’s Antilop High Chair.
Bibs, Plates, Bowls & Spoons
Austin Baby Co. makes excellent silicone bibs, bento boxes, bowls, and placemats that are easy to wash and take on the go to restaurants. EZPZ and Avanchy have great first food sets. Elk and Friends makes perfectly kid-sized stainless steel cups with silicone straws and lids that are spill proof. Otherwise, I’d look for anything in non-toxic wood or silicone.
Once Upon A Farm
Their organic baby food pouches are cold-pressed and free from preservatives. We love their blends for quick, on-the-go snacks that are still nutrient-dense and thoughtfully crafted.
Serenity Kids
What sets Serenity Kids apart is their focus on protein and healthy fats, not just fruit-based carbs. Their savory blends are great for keeping kids off the sugar coaster. It’s one of the only baby food brands I’ve found that prioritizes ancestral nutrition.
Gut & Health Support
Gut health is the root of all health! I’m so passionate about gut health because I know it can affect everything from food sensitivities to ear infections to rashes and more. For a little added gut information and/or supplemental support, I turn here:
Tiny Health – Gut Program
Tiny Health offers gut microbiome testing for babies, which can be incredibly insightful – especially if your little one has had antibiotics, ear infections, colic, or food sensitivities. It helps you better understand how to support baby’s digestion and immunity naturally.
Mary Ruth’s Organics
Mary Ruth’s supplements are gentle, sugar-free, and specially formulated for babies and toddlers. I love that most of their tinctures are given as liquid drops, which makes administering them to babies and toddlers a total breeze!
Safe Sleep & Nursery Picks
When I think of setting up baby’s nursery, decor is low on my list. Sorry! I’m mostly concerned with the materials that will be going into the nursery – are they natural and non-toxic?
Conventional furniture (with plywoods, glues, and synthetic materials) and fabrics such as polyester can off-gas harmful chemicals – everything from formaldehydes to fire-retardants and more.
Here’s what I look for instead: Natural, solid wood furniture. Natural fabrics such as 100% cotton, wool, or jute. This goes for upholstered furniture, rugs, cushion covers, and beyond. Here are a few of my favorites:
Stokke Sleepi Crib
This convertible crib grows with your child and is designed with sustainable, non-toxic materials. It has a sleek, Scandinavian look that fits beautifully in any nursery and prioritizes both safety and style.
Mattress
Choosing a baby mattress can be confusing with so many options. My two favorites? Naturepedic Organic Natural Mattress for Infant and Toddler or Avocado’s organic crib mattress. While we don’t live in a perfect world and not every baby item will be non-toxic, I’d prioritize purchasing a non-toxic mattress as one of my top moves for baby’s health. Your baby will spend so much time with his or her sweet face breathing against it.
Babyletto Kiwi Glider Electronic Recliner
This glider is a great choice for comfort. But just as importantly, it utilizes Greenguard Gold Certified fabric, which means it won’t off-gas harsh VOCs and chemicals into the nursery.
HoMedics White Noise Sound Machine or the Yogasleep Dohm Sound Machine
I highly suggest white noise for the baby’s nursery, especially if you live in a condo, next to a noisy street, or have other children at home. To be honest, after trying different sound machines, I always go back to using my kids’ air purifier as a sound machine. It is a peaceful, non-stimulating sound machine that also doubles as an air-purifier throughout the night.
