The team’s new case in NCIS season 23 episode 3 kicks off when Petty Officer Third Class Steven Keogh’s dead body is found. What’s mysterious about it is the bloody brain matter coming out of his nose and ears, adding a mystery to the case. Their investigation points to blackmail being made by an unknown woman, and coincidentally, it’s the same blackmail case Agent Sawyer is handling.

It turns out that Keogh’s death is only the first of the three deaths in episode 3. Two more deaths follow, including the woman in the blackmail pictures, Olga. There are two main culprits: Hairy Dave, who owns the bar the sailors frequent, allowing him to pick out his targets, and Albanian gangster Arben. They pay Olga to sleep with their victims and take incriminating pictures to use as blackmail.

In Keogh’s case, the blackmail is not about money, but to manipulate him to steal the LSAD from his base. After Hairy Dave gets the LSAD, he uses it to kill Keogh. He also uses it to kill Arben so he can get all the money from their blackmail schemes. Olga’s death is because she knows too much about the illegal operation. The team’s effort ends with Hairy Dave getting arrested at the end of episode 3.

NCIS season 23 episode 3: What happens to Torres, and does he survive?

Nick Torres almost becomes the fourth fatality in NCIS season 23 episode 3, but he’s lucky enough that he doesn’t end up dead. When Hairy Dave uses the LSAD, which can penetrate concrete walls, to kill Olga, the team is also in her shop. But while the others are tending to Arben’s dead body at the time, Torres is with Olga, questioning her about what she knows about the real perpetrators.

It just so happens that Torres is a bit far away from Olga when Hairy Dave uses the LSAD. If he were any closer to her, he would have ended up dead, with brain matter coming out of his nose and ears. That said, he doesn’t end episode 3 unscathed. Being in close proximity to Olga when the LSAD is used, he sustains brain inflammation, causing his erratic, almost animalistic behavior.

At some point in episode 3, Torres gets headaches and blurred vision, gets aggressive, and attacks Sawyer. What they don’t know is he’s experiencing the effects of the LSAD, but the good thing is it’s mild compared to the others.

Other highlights in NCIS season 23 episode 3

Aside from the primary case and Torres’s mysterious behavior, which both get resolved at the end of episode 3, Torres’s jealousy and the tension between him and Knight are also highlighted in the episode. He might be reeling from the effects of the LSAD, but there is also an underlying jealousy when he sees Knight working with Sawyer.

But thanks to ghost Henry getting the two officers stuck in the elevator, they talk it out. Knight doesn’t blame him, and she understands it too, because it’s the same jealousy and fear of losing her partner that she felt back when Torres was dating her sister. Knight also gets some good news in episode 3—she’s going to train with NCIS Elite. Meanwhile, everyone else is still keeping secrets from Parker.
