MIAMI — Kyle Stowers hit a two-run walk-off homer and finished with three hits as the Miami Marlins defeated the Kansas City Royals 8-7 in 10 innings on Friday.
Stowers had already tied a Marlins franchise record with his fourth home run in two games when he hit a three-run shot in the first inning. After Miami had built — then squandered — a 5-0 lead, the first-time All-Star followed with the biggest swing of the game against Carlos Estévez (4-3) that sent the winning shot 394 feet to right field.
Stowers went 3 for 5 and reached base in his first two at-bats to extend his on-base streak to 10 plate appearances, also tying a club record.
Adam Frazier entered as a pinch-hitter in the 10th and drove in automatic runner Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr, who had reached on an infield single. Frazier doubled to right off Lake Bachar (5-0) to give Kansas City the lead entering the bottom half.
In the Marlins’ 10th, Augustin Ramirez drove in automatic runner Derek Hill with a single before Stowers’ walk-off.
CHICAGO — Seiya Suzuki hit a three-run homer, and the Chicago Cubs stopped Boston’s 10-game win streak with a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Friday.
Colin Rea pitched five effective innings for Chicago in the majors’ first game after the All-Star break. Working around a season-high four walks, the right-hander allowed one run and four hits in his fourth consecutive win.
Boston had won 12 of 13 to surge into contention in the rugged AL East. But Lucas Giolito got off to shaky start and the Red Sox left eight runners on base in the opener of a challenging six-game trip.
Pitching for the first time since July 9, Giolito (6-2) walked his first two batters of the game. Suzuki then drove a four-seam fastball deep to center for his 26th homer, delighting the crowd of 41,011 on a picturesque afternoon at Wrigley Field.
Nico Hoerner tacked on an RBI single for the NL Central leaders in the sixth.
Giolito was charged with four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first loss since May 6. The right-hander went 5-0 with a sparkling 0.70 ERA in his previous six starts.
PITTSBURGH — Luis Robert Jr. homered and drove in two runs, Michael A. Taylor added a bases-clearing double and the Chicago White Sox breezed past reeling Pittsburgh.
Edgar Quero also homered for Chicago, taking Pirates starter Bailey Falter (6-5) deep in the first inning as the White Sox jumped on Pittsburgh early to win for just the 12th time in 48 road games this season.
Andrew Benintendi and Colson Montgomery added two hits and drove in two runs apiece for Chicago.
Jonathan Cannon (4-7) limited the Pirates to a run on five hits over seven innings to win his second consecutive decision. Cannon benefited from some excellent defense behind him, including a dazzling diving catch in left-center by Robert to rob Isiah Kiner-Falefa of extra bases in the bottom of the third.
PHILADELPHIA — Taylor Ward hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Jo Adell and Jorge Soler also went deep, and Los Angeles beat Philadelphia.
The teams combined to hit six home runs, but it was Ward’s shot, his 22nd of the season, in the seventh that completed the Angels’ comeback from a three-run deficit.
Soler hit a solo homer in the second inning and Adell launched a two-run homer in the fourth. Both came off Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo, who allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out seven.
Mike Trout, playing in just his sixth game in his hometown in his 15-year career, had a double and an RBI single. Trout also did outfield drills before the game, as he continues to work back from a bruised left knee. He hasn’t played in the field since April 30 and has served solely as a designated hitter since returning a month later.
The Angels used seven pitchers to cobble together nine innings in a bullpen game. Sam Bachman (2-2) pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn the win and Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save.
Bryce Harper homered twice and had four RBIs and Kyle Schwarber also homered for Philadelphia, which has lost five of its last seven games.
CLEVELAND — Johnathan Rodríguez hit his first home run in the majors, Slade Cecconi went a career-long 8 1/3 innings and Cleveland beat the Athletics.
David Fry also went deep and José Ramírez added a pair of extra-base hits to help the Guardians win for the seventh time in eight games following a 10-game losing streak.
Athletics’ All-Star Brent Rooker hit his 100th career home run. Shea Langeliers added a solo shot in the seventh inning.
Cecconi (5-4) allowed six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. The right-hander retired the first 12 Athletics he faced before Rooker led off the fifth with a solo shot to left.
TORONTO — Chris Bassitt and three relievers combined on a shutout, and Toronto roughed up San Francisco’s Justin Verlander in a win.
Bassitt (10-4) struck out five and walked none as AL East-leading Toronto kicked off the second half by improving to 33-16 at home.
Brendon Little struck out both batters he faced, Yariel Rodríguez worked the eighth and Jeff Hoffman finished for the Blue Jays, who have won 14 of 18. The shutout was Toronto’s seventh of the season.
Verlander (0-8) allowed four runs and matched a season high by allowing nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, extending his career-worst winless streak to 16 starts. It was Verlander’s shortest outing since he went 2 1/3 innings against Seattle on April 4, his second start of 2025.
WASHINGTON — Manny Machado’s grand slam capped a five-run ninth inning, and San Diego beat Washington.
Jake Cronenworth singled leading off the ninth against Kyle Finnegan (1-4) and went to third on a single by Jose Iglesias. Elias Díaz executed his second safety squeeze of the game, scoring Cronenworth to give San Diego a 3-2 lead.
A single by Fernando Tatis Jr. and a walk to Luis Arraez loaded the bases for Machado, who homered into the Padres bullpen in left-center.
CJ Abrams tied it 2-all with a two-run homer off San Diego reliever Jason Adams with one out in the eighth.
Xander Bogaerts had two hits and scored a run for the Padres, who have won four of five.
Wandy Peralta (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win.
Jacob Young had two hits for the Nationals, who have lost five straight and nine of 10.
ATLANTA — Ozzie Albies hit a three-run homer, Ronald Acuña Jr. made a spectacular throw and Atlanta beat New York.
Spencer Strider (4-7) threw six shutout innings, striking out eight and allowing three hits and three walks.
Albies was 1 for 3 with four RBIs and launched a 390-foot homer just in front of the Chop House in right to make it 6-0 in the third inning.
Acuña was 2 for 3 with a double, triple and runs scored, but his best play came when he threw out Jorbit Vivas for a double play in the third inning.
Vivas was trying to tag up from second base on a fly to deep in the corner in right, but Acuña’s throw reached third on the fly to get a surprised Vivas, who slowed up as he approached the bag.
Ian Hamilton (1-1) took the loss after leading off a bullpen game for the Yankees by surrendering three runs in the first inning. Rico Garcia, making his debut with the Yankees, gave up Albies’ three-run homer in the third.
TAMPA, Fla — All-Star Home Run Derby runner-up Junior Caminero went deep twice, Yandy Díaz hit a grand slam and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore to snap a four-game losing streak.
Caminero lost to MLB home-run leader Cal Raleigh in Monday’s Derby but started the second half of the season with his 24th and 25th homers of the season, his second career multihomer game.
He hit a three-run shot in the first then followed Díaz’s slam with a solo homer in a six-run sixth.
Díaz’s homer was his 15th and his second career slam. Danny Jansen added his 10th homer.
Caminero, Díaz and Chandler Simpson had three hits each. Simpson extended his MLB-best active hitting streak to 17 games.
Taj Bradley (6-6) threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits and one walk while fanning six. In his six previous career starts against Baltimore he was 1-3 with an 8.65 ERA.
NEW YORK — Austin Hays hit two of Cincinnati’s four home runs and Nick Lodolo threw seven strong innings as it beat New York.
Matt McLain and Tyler Stephenson each launched a two-run shot for the Reds, who have won five of six. It was the third time this season they went deep four times in a game.
After allowing Juan Soto’s first-inning homer and an RBI single by Jeff McNeil in the second, Lodolo (7-6) retired 16 of the next 18 hitters — including 10 in a row during one stretch. He finished with seven strikeouts and matched his longest start of the year.
Soto’s solo drive gave the Mets an early lead in Sean Manaea’s first start this season. Re-signed to a three-year contract in the offseason, the left-hander missed the first 95 games due to an oblique strain and a bone chip in his pitching elbow. He returned with an extended relief appearance Sunday at Kansas City.
Manaea gave up Hays’ first homer but struck out six over four innings of one-hit ball. He was pulled after 69 pitches, and Cincinnati scored seven runs off a depleted Mets bullpen.
Rookie right-hander Alex Carrillo (0-1) was hit hard, allowing five runs and three homers in 1 1/3 innings.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Corey Seager hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning and Texas finally got back to .500 with a victory over Detroit that extended the MLB-best Tigers’ season-worst losing streak to five.
The Tigers (59-39) had a majors-high six players this week at the All-Star Game after going into the break with the best record in the majors, even after losing their last four games before that.
Seager lined a ball into the right-center gap that rolled to the wall. Cody Freeman, making his big-league debut as a pinch-runner after Kyle Higashioka’s one-out double, scored the first run and was followed home by Josh Smith, who walked against Tommy Kahnle (1-3).
Chris Martin (1-5), the third Texas pitcher, worked the eighth. Robert Garcia pitched the ninth for his seventh save in 10 chances to wrap up the 10th shutout by the Rangers this season.
Both starting pitchers worked into the sixth without allowing a run. Rangers left-hander Patrick Corbin struck out six in 5 2/3 innings. Detroit’s Reese Olson had five Ks before departing after Jonah Heim’s leadoff double in the sixth, only the second hit given up by the right-hander.
DENVER — Ryan McMahon’s two-run homer capped a four-run first inning, Jordan Beck homered and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle and MLB-worst Colorado opened its second half of the season with a win over Minnesota.
The Rockies had four straight extra-base hits in the bottom of the first with doubles by Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak, a triple by Beck and McMahon’s 14th home run.
Beck hit his 11th homer in the second inning and finished with two RBIs.
Kyle Freeland (2-10) earned his second win in 18 starts this season. His last victory was on June 4 against Miami. Against Minnesota, he went six innings, giving up one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Seth Halvorsen earned his ninth save.
Willi Castro’s three-run homer off Jake Bird in the seventh inning cut the Twins’ deficit to 6-4. Byron Buxton had three hits, including his 22nd homer in the fifth. Ryan Jeffers matched a career high with four hits.
Chris Paddack (3-9) went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
DIAMONDBACKS 7, CARDINALS 3
PHOENIX — Brandon Pfaadt pitched seven scoreless innings, Geraldo Perdomo had two RBIs and Arizona beat St. Louis.
Pfaadt (10-6) allowed four hits with six strikeouts and no walks in his second straight sterling start. Adrian Del Castillo had three hits, an RBI and scored twice against Andre Pallante (5-6) after being called up from Triple-A Reno.
St. Louis scored three runs off John Curtiss in the ninth, on Victor Scott II’s two-run homer and Pedro Pagés’ run-scoring single. The Cardinals have lost four of six.
Pfaadt tossed a career-high eight innings against San Diego in his last start before the All-Star break, allowing two runs on four hits.
The right-hander allowed two hits through the first six innings before the Cardinals got two on in the seventh. Pfaadt struck out Jordan Walker and got Pagés on a weak fly to center to end the inning.
LOS ANGELES — Quinn Priester outpitched Tyler Glasnow for six innings, Caleb Durbin homered and drove in both runs, and Milwaukee beat Los Angeles for its eighth straight victory.
The Brewers equalled their longest winning streak of the season from May 25 to June 2. They continued their dominance over the NL West leaders, having outscored them 15-4 during a three-game sweep in Milwaukee last week.
Priester (8-2) allowed three hits and struck out a season-high 10 on 77 pitches. He struck out the side in the first and fifth. All-Star closer Trevor Megill worked the ninth for his 22nd save.
Durbin yelled “Let’s go!” as he rounded the bases after his 410-foot shot to straightaway center field off reliever Kirby Yates with two outs in the seventh.
The Brewers led 1-0 on Durbin’s RBI double into the left-field corner that scored Isaac Collins, who walked leading off the fifth.
Glasnow (1-1) gave up one run and four hits in six innings while striking out six.
SEATTLE — Randy Arozarena hit a solo home run and Luis Castillo threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings as Seattle beat Houston.
Arozarena hit an elevated fastball from Astros left-hander Brandon Walter (1-3) out to left-centre field in the fourth inning for his 18th home run of the season. In the process, Arozarena became only the second player in the majors this season with 10 or more home runs over a 14-game stretch.
Designated hitter Mitch Garver doubled the Mariners’ lead in the seventh inning when he pounced on a fastball down the middle from Astros left-hander Bennett Sousa for a solo shot.
Seattle broke things open with a four-run eighth inning on RBI singles from J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh, a sacrifice fly from Donovan Solano and a wild pitch.
Castillo (7-5), in his first start after the All-Star break, struck out seven and yielded only three hits — all singles — before departing in the seventh inning.
