MLB Roundup: Lowe powers Rays past Nationals

WASHINGTON — Josh Lowe homered twice and drove in all four of Tampa Bay’s runs, Ryan Pepiot pitched five scoreless innings and the Rays beat Washington 4-1.

It was the third multihomer game of Lowe’s career and first this season.

The game was delayed briefly twice, once in the third inning when what appeared to be a young fan behind first base ran to the Nationals dugout, and then in the seventh when a fan ran out from the left field seats and stood next to Rays shortstop Carson Williams.

Pepiot (10-10) allowed one baserunner in each of the first four innings, but didn’t allow anyone past second base. He struck out six and walked three. Bryan Baker pitched the ninth for his third save of the season and first with Tampa Bay.

TORONTO — Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Milwaukee (85-52) owns the best record in the majors.

Back in the lineup after missing 28 games because of a strained right hamstring, Chourio broke a 1-1 tie with a drive to right off Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman. The homer was Chourio’s 18th.

Yelich hit a drive to left on Hoffman’s next pitch for his 27th homer.

Hoffman (8-6) has allowed 14 home runs this season, tied for the most by any big league reliever.

Aaron Ashby (3-1) got one out for the win, and Abner Uribe finished for his fourth save in six chances.

Milwaukee’s Quinn Priester gave up five hits and one unearned run in six innings. Priester has not lost since May 13 at Cleveland.

Gausman allowed four hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked none.

BOSTON — Oneil Cruz homered, Bryan Reynolds drove in two runs and Pittsburgh beat Boston.

Tommy Pham and Nick Gonzales also drove in two runs apiece as Pittsburgh won for the eighth time in 10 games. Johan Oviedo (2-0) pitched five innings of two-run ball.

Pittsburgh also beat Boston 4-2 on Friday night. The Pirates (61-76) are in last place in the NL Central, and the Red Sox (75-62) hold the second wild-card position in the AL.

Carlos Narváez hit his 12th homer for Boston, and Romy Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs.

Red Sox right-hander Dustin May (7-11) permitted seven runs, six earned, and eight hits in 5.1 innings. It was his worst start since he was acquired in a July 31 trade with the Dodgers.

NEW YORK — Connor Norby had three RBIs in the final three innings and Miami beat New York after squandering a six-run lead.

Juan Soto homered twice for the Mets, who fell behind 8-2 in the third as All-Star lefty David Peterson gave up a career-high eight runs in two-plus innings.

Mark Vientos hit a three-run homer and Soto launched a solo shot before his two-run drive tied it 8-all in the sixth. New York, however, was unable to complete the comeback.

Francisco Lindor had a leadoff homer for the Mets, who began the day with a five-game lead over Cincinnati for the final National League wild card. New York was five games behind Philadelphia atop the NL East.

Playing in his second game since returning from a six-week stint on the injured list, Norby lofted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh off Tyler Rogers (4-5) and added a two-run double against Edwin Díaz two innings later.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera gave up six runs (five earned) in four innings.

    PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 2, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA — Trea Turner hit a two-run single with two outs in the 10th inning to lift Philadelphia to a win over Atlanta, spoiling the return of reigning NL Cy Young winner Chris Sale to Atlanta’s starting rotation.

Nacho Alvarez Jr. put Atlanta ahead 2-1 with an RBI single in the 10th.

Philadelphia loaded the bases against Hunter Stratton (0-1). Dylan Dodd came on and struck out Brandon Marsh and had Turner in an 0-2 hole before the Phillies shortstop lined a 94-mph fastball into right field, scoring Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos.

Matt Strahm (2-3) got the win after giving up just Alvarez’s hit.

Sale and Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez both had strong outings.

CINCINNATI — Willson Contreras and Pedro Pagés homered to help St. Louis beat Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (68-68) has lost five straight and eight of nine, leaving the Reds five games behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild card.

Michael McGreevy (6-2) pitched six strong innings for the Cardinals (68-69), who won their third in a row. He allowed one run and five hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Kyle Leahy got four outs for his second major league save and first this season. He gave up back-to-back singles to begin the ninth, then retired three consecutive batters to end it.

CLEVELAND — Kyle Manzardo had a two-run homer in the sixth inning, Gavin Williams struck out eight over seven innings and Cleveland beat Seattle.

The Guardians have won the first two games in the series to pull within three games of Seattle, which holds the third and final American League wild-card position. The Mariners have lost seven straight on the road and are 5-11 overall since Aug. 13.

Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning against Hunter Gaddis to trim Cleveland’s lead to 4-3, but Cade Smith entered and retired the four batters he faced for his ninth save.

Williams (9-5) scattered four hits and allowed one run — on a Jorge Polanco homer in the seventh — in winning for the sixth time in eight home decisions this season.

HOUSTON — Oswald Peraza hit a two-run single in the ninth inning to help Los Angeles snap a three-game losing skid by beating Houston.

Peraza entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning and hit a bases-loaded fly ball to deep right field that eluded the outstretched glove of Cam Smith. It was the fourth straight hit off Astros closer Bryan Abreu (3-4), who had not allowed a run in his previous 12 appearances.

The Angels third run of the ninth inning scored when Mike Trout walked with the bases loaded.

Kyle Hendricks allowed one run while scattering seven hits over six innings. He held the Astros to 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, the one hit coming on Jesús Sánchez’s third-inning infield single that scored Jeremy Peña.

MINNEAPOLIS — Elías Díaz homered twice and San Diego beat Minnesota.

Ramón Laureano also homered for San Diego, which scored 11 runs against Minnesota relievers.

Manny Machado had two hits to top 1,000 with the Padres. He had an RBI single in the Padres’ seven-run seventh inning that gave the Padres a 10-3 lead.

Byron Buxton homered and James Outman and Trevor Larnach each had two hits for the Twins.

Reliever Adrian Morejon (11-4) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to pick up the win for the Padres, who began the day two games behind the first-place Dodgers in the AL West and two games behind the Cubs for the top NL wild-card spot.

Twins starter Taj Bradley allowed just one run and one hit over five innings, and Buxton’s two-run homer off Nick Pivetta gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead after five.

CHICAGO — Aaron Judge hit his 42nd home run, Cody Bellinger delivered a tiebreaking single in a three-run 11th inning and New York extended their season-high win streak to seven games by beating Chicago.

Bellinger gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead with one out in the 11th when he blooped a single to left field against Tyler Alexander (4-13) after Judge was intentionally walked. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with an RBI double. After Bellinger got thrown out by first baseman Lenyn Sosa trying to score on Austin Wells’ grounder, Anthony Volpe doubled in another run to make it 5-2.

Wells also homered for the Yankees, who moved within two games of first-place Toronto in the AL East for the first time since the All-Star break. New York has won nine straight road games for the first time since early in the 1998 season.

Cam Schlittler tossed six sparkling innings and David Bednar (5-5) got the win in relief. Camilo Doval pitched around an RBI groundout by Will Robertson in the 11th for his 16th save this season and first with the Yankees. His first 15 came with San Francisco.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Kansas City over Detroit.

After pinch-hitter Tyler Tolbert drew a seven-pitch walk from Tyler Holton (5-4), Witt connected for his 20th home run, a 427-foot shot to dead center. Witt, who singled earlier, extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Lucas Erceg (6-3) struck out one in a 1-2-3 eighth inning before Carlos Estévez worked around Riley Greene’s one-out double for his 36th save.

Making his Royals debut, Stephen Kolek threw six innings and allowed a run and four hits, and struck out three.

Willy Adames hit his 25th longball in the first inning for the Giants, who have homered in 13 consecutive games — tying their longest streak since 2019.

Rogers (8-2) allowed five hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter for the fifth time in 14 starts this season. It was his 10th straight start of six-plus innings while allowing two runs or fewer, the longest streak by an Orioles pitcher during the Baltimore era that dates to 1954.

Shawn Dubin got the final six outs for the Orioles.

DENVER — Kyle Tucker had two hits and an RBI, Javier Assad won his first game in almost a year and Chicago beat Colorado.

LOS ANGELES — Corbin Carroll homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and Eduardo Rodriguez pitched the Arizona Diamondbacks to a victory over Los Angeles.

Arizona has won four straight games — all on the road against the Brewers and Dodgers, a pair of National League division leaders.

Rodriguez (6-8) gave up four hits in six shutout innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Ildemaro Vargas added a three-run homer off Kirby Yates in the ninth.

Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow (1-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before he was tagged for three runs in the seventh.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Josh Jung had three hits, including a pair of RBI doubles, and Merrill Kelly pitched into the seventh inning as surging Texas defeated the Athletics for their fourth consecutive victory.

Wyatt Langford and Dylan Moore homered for the Rangers (70-67), who have won seven of eight to pull within 2 1/2 games of Seattle for the final American League wild card.

Kyle Higashioka delivered two RBI singles and rookie Michael Helmen had an early two-run double. Adolis García also had three of Texas’ 17 hits as every Rangers batter got at least one.

Kelly (11-7) allowed three runs and six hits while throwing just 79 pitches in 6 1/3 innings. Handed a 4-0 lead, he gave up solo homers to Lawrence Butler and Brent Rooker in the third.

Rooker finished with three hits, but Texas won its fifth straight against the A’s and leads the season series 7-5.

Athletics starter Mason Barnett (0-1) was tagged for five runs and eight hits over four-plus innings in his major league debut. He was lifted after Langford homered leading off the fifth to make it 5-2.
