Merkel receives high marks internationally during her last year in office: Survey

A global survey by the Pew Research Center put German Chancellor Angela Merkel in good stead as her tenure draws to a close, with 79 percent of respondents having a positive view of Germany and 77 percent having confidence in Merkel personally.

Merkel’s approval ratings in the survey surpass those of other global leaders such as Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Confidence in Merkel is at or near an all-time high in many countries in 2021, especially in the area of foreign policy. The Netherlands and Spain have the highest confidence in the German chancellor, as 90 percent of respondents from both countries said they trusted her when it came to doing the right thing regarding global affairs.

The overall median shows 77 percent of respondents from all surveyed countries share that sentiment, with the Greeks being the exception: They have the lowest confidence in Merkel at only 30 percent.

Although the coronavirus pandemic posed a challenge for the long-standing leader, her handling of COVID-19 is internationally well-respected and boasts a 66 percent approval rate. Germany’s response to the pandemic is generally viewed more positively than the responses of the World Health Organization, China, the EU as a whole or the U.S.

When it comes to Germany’s role in the EU, the survey produced mixed results. Only 54 percent agree Germany has the right amount of influence in the EU, with all countries stating the country has too much influence rather than too little. Again, Greece is an (unsurprising) outlier — 86 percent of Greek respondents say Germany has too much influence in the EU, an antipathy with likely roots in the European debt crisis.

The Pew Research Center conducted nationally representative surveys of 17,823 adults in 16 advanced economies in North America, Europe and Asia for the report. Data from Germany is not included.
