Marvel Artist Mike Deodato Jr. Body Shames Tenoch Huerta’s Namor

Marvel Comics artist Mike Deodato Jr. has compared himself to the MCU’s Namor, Tenoch Huerta, in a strange social media post.

Over the course of his career, Deodato Jr. has worked on some of Marvel’s biggest titles, such as Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Incredible Hulk and many more. However, the artist appears to have taken issue with Marvel Studios’ Namor casting for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Sharing an image of himself next to a still of Tenoch Huerta’s Namor, Mike Deodato Jr. has shocked fans with both his choice of photo and his comments body-shaming Huerta.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Mike Deodato Jr. compared an image of Tenoch Huerta as Namor from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer with an image of himself in his birthday suit.

Both images showed their subject from behind with a bare back – and bare everything else, in Deodato’s case. A caption Deodato added over the image read “You can tell somebody screwed things up when a character from a movie looks in worst [sic] shape than the 60 years old artist who drew him.”

Since taking the image down, Mike Deodato Jr. has shared a post apologizing for his comments, in which he asserts he “was mocking the comic book character, not the actor.” While he appears to bear no ill will to Tenoch Huerta, who he says “will do a great job with the character,” the original post compared his body to Huerta’s, not a comic book illustration of Namor.

Mike Deodato Jr.’s claim that the original post simply “got out of hand because of internet haters” doesn’t do much to help the sincerity of his apology. It seems odd that an artist who has often worked on Namor took such an inappropriate approach in response to Tenoch Huerta’s casting as the character.

Here is the synopsis for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever:

“In Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.”

Directed by Ryan Coogler from a script he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman, and Angela Bassett.
