Live: Wallabies vs British and Irish Lions

Wallabies: 12 (Tries: Max Jorgensen 28′, Carlo Tizzano 68′; Conversion: Ben Donaldson 1/1)

B&I Lions: 27 (Tries: Sione Tuipulotu 9′, Tom Curry 36, Dan Sheehan 42′; Conversion: Finn Russell 3/3 Penalty goal: Finn Russell1/1, Marcus Smith 1/1)

74′ PENALTY GOAL: Lions have a 15-point lead

That should put the result beyond doubt.

    Marcus Smith kicks the goal.

    Lions lead 27-12.

They are beyond two converted tries.

73′ Penalty to the Lions. It will be a gimme kick

The Wallabies have conceded a penalty on their own goal line.

The Lions were on the attack, and an Australian forward was caught using his hands in the ruck.

Replacement back Marcus Smith will kick this with his eyes closed.

    68′ TRY: Wallabies score

They won’t take that off Australia.

The Wallabies have their second try.

Replacement forward Carlo Tizzano has taken a pick-and-drive and scored.

Since the disallowed try, the Wallabies have continued to camp in the Lions’ half.

The try came off a penalty, then line-out.

The Lions were very good in defence, as they have been all night.

But the sheer weight of possession finally took its toll.

60′ NO TRY: TMO denies Australia

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has scored for the Wallabies.

HANG ON. The TMO is checking this.

Suaalii took a crash ball and was hit three metres from the line.

He hits the ground, but the tackler has not completed the tackle.

There is a mass of players and the drive from Australia gets Suaalii over the line.

Surely, Suaalii was held at some point. There were other Lions who then got their hands on the ball, while the Wallaby was on the deck, and that would constitute a tackle.

The TMO and the ref have decided there was a tackle.

    Lions survive.

59′ Lions warned the next penalty on the goal line will result in a sin bin

The Wallabies take the line-out and go for the maul.

The Lions are able to nullify the drive, and force the Wallabies to play on.

The home side gradually goes from the left wing to the centre of the field.

    Five, six, seven phases.

    PENALTY WALLABIES. Lions were offside.

The Wallabies go for a scrum, five metres out, under the goal posts.

    57′ Wallabies on the attack

The Wallabies are mounting an attack on the Lions’ goal line.

The Lions are able to hold on, but concede a penalty for offside.

The Wallabies kick for touch, and have a line-out, just 10 metres from the Lions goal line …

    52′ Wallabies miss a chance

    Great defence from the Lions.

    Poor execution from the Wallabies.

The home side had a line-out, 15 metres away from the Lions’ goal line.

The Wallabies take the ball off the line-out and take a run down the left flank.

But the Lions defenders were not only waiting for the tackle, they were prepared to hold up the ball carrier.

The Wallabies cannot get the ball out of the breakdown, the the tourists are awarded the scrum.

Wallabies make change in the front row

Hooker Billy Pollard and prop Angus Bell have come onto the field.

James Slipper (number 1) Matt Faessler (number 2) are off.

Why do the reserves warm-up in the goal area?

Feels like they’re getting a bit loose with letting the reserve players hang out in the try areas?

    – n

It’s very common for the European players to warm up in the in-goal, and almost inside the playing surface..

Most of their grounds do not have the 15-metre run-off at the end of the dead-ball line, like most grounds in Australia.

It is a habit, and as long as it doesn’t disrupt play, which it hasn’t, it’s fine.

42′ TRY: Dan Sheehan scores for the Lions

It is a disaster for the Wallabies.

They had the line-out, 40 metres from the Lions’ goal line.

But the throw from Matt Faessler is too long, and the Lions have the ball.

Tom Curry gets an offload away which leads to a big linebreak up the middle of the park.

The Wallabies are able to hold on for two more phases, but their defensive line is in tatters.

Hooker Dan Sheehan scores in the right corner.

    KICK-OFF: Second half begins

Wallabies flyhalf Tom Lyngah gets the second half underway.

The Wallabies need to lift if they are to cause a boilover at Lang Park.

The Lions will want to clean up some of their errors, and continue to be resolute in defence.

Why was Tom Curry not shown yelllow?

Why wasn’t that tackle on Tom Lynagh in the air worth at least a yellow card? It’d just about be a red in Super Rugby. Are the international rules that different?

    – Derek

    G’day Derek.

    It’s a fair question.

I am OK with it not being a yellow card, because the degree of danger was very low.

However, in previous years, or on another day, it could easily have been a sin bin offence.

Wallabies surround referee Ben O’Keeffe at half-time

On the stroke of half-time, the Wallabies were awarded a penalty for a dangerous tackle.

Flyhalf Tom Lyngah was in the air, and was hit by by Lions flanker Tom Curry.

Referee Ben O’Keeffe did not believe the tackle was dangerous enough to warrant a sin bin.

That is probably a fair call, as Lynagh’s foot was an inch off the ground.

But the Wallabies have surrounded the Kiwi ref, almost certainly asking why Curry was not shown a yellow card.

HT: Lions 17 leading Wallabies 5

    Half-time has been called.

The British and Irish Lions lead 17-5.

The Lions were by far the better team in that first half.

Defensively they are sound, and in attack, their ablilty to break the first tackle and offload is hurting Australia.

36′ TRY: Tom Curry scores for the Lions

The pressure from the Lions was too much, in the end.

The Lions took the tap kick from five metres out.

The tourists had two phases, then flanker Tom Curry went for the pick-and-drive, got over the line, and grounded the ball.

    Finn Russell’s conversion is successful.

    Lions 17 Wallabies 5

35′ Wallabies hanging on as Lions press

The Lions have a line-out five metres from the Wallaby line.

The maul attempt is brought to ground immediately.

The Lions have three phases close to the ruck.

The Lions drive for the line … HELD UP.

But it’s another penalty for offside.

The Lions go for the tap …

    34′ Penalty to the Lions

The Wallabies have been caught offside while defending their goal line.

The Lions are going for the line-out.

32′ Lions miss a big chance

Lock forward Joe McCarthy is open on the left wing.

Finn Russell puts in a crossfield kick.

The bounce is unkind and McCarthy is unable to ground it.

    Wallabies survive.
