Live: Penrith denied match-winning field goal, Storm win in golden point

Live score: Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm

    Question from the audience

Do Storm attempt conversion? Or not in Golden Point?

    – Margot

    Hi Margot.

No. Once someone scores in golden point, that’s it. No need for a conversion.

Harry Grant says controversial penalty that saved Melbourne is ‘the rules within the game’

Melbourne captain Harry Grant was part of the two most significant moments tonight.

He scored the match-winning try in golden point.

He was also awarded a penalty after the ref and Bunker deemed he was obstructed by Penrith prop Moses Leota, while trying to chase down a field goal kick from Nathan Cleary.

Cleary’s kick would have been a goal, had the penalty not been awarded.

Speaking to ABC Sport, Grant was in no doubt the officials made the correct decision.

“I think that’s been a rule all season. I think everyone in the game would understand that’s been policed all year.

“That’s the standard that’s been set.

“Everyone’s aware of it in the game, and what it is.

“They knew straight away, you could hear the opposition telling their players to out of the road.

“I think everyone would understand that that’s the rules within the game at the moment.”

Nathan Cleary reflects on the controversial penalty that denied Penrith a field goal

With the scores locked at 18-all, Penrith captain Nathan Cleary kicked a field goal which would have given the Panthers a one-point lead with 90 seconds left.

But referee Ashley Klein called a penalty for the Storm, after Harry Grant fell to the ground attempting to chase after Cleary.

Penrith prop Moses Leota was standing 10 metres in front of Cleary. Grant appeared to run towards Leota, while chasing Cleary, and went to ground.

Leota was penalised for blocking Grant, a decision that was upheld by the Bunker when challenged.

Cleary says he is unsure about the interpretation of the blocking rule, believing that where Leota was standing, away from the play the ball and in a realistic chance of receiving a pass, was legal.

“I’m not really sure what the interpretation is,” he says.

I thought [the rule] was brought in so that people wouldn’t stand right next to the play-the-ball.

“Not everyone in the team can get behind me. They have to be in a position to get the ball.”

HARRY GRANT SCORES A TRY TO WIN THE GAME FOR MELBOURNE

    Harry Grant, you superstar.

The Storm lined up to kick the match-winning field goal.

The Panthers are rushing to block the kick, and Grant runs into open space and scores under the post.

It’s the easiest try Grant will ever score!

Panthers drop the ball on the first set of GP

Penrith have first use of the ball.

    They take it to halfway.

    DROPPED.

Melbourne has the ball and they are running towards towards Penrith’s line.

    End of 80 minutes: 18-all

We are going to golden point.

Penrith will feel hard done by.

Nathan Cleary successfully kicked a field goal, but it was denied by a blocking penalty against Moses Leota, on Harry Grant.

ABC Sport caller, and former coach, Matthew Elliott thought Grant was milking a penalty and he was never going to reach Cleary.

80′ Nathan Cleary has TWO field goal attempts blocked. Golden point needed

78′ Panthers denied field goal by penalty

Nathan Cleary has kicked a field goal, but the ref has called a penalty.

Prop Moses Leota was standing in front of Cleary, and Melbourne’s Harry Grant has run into him.

A penalty is called and Penrith challenges.

Grant has milked this well. The challenge is unsuccessful, but I don’t think Grant was ever getting close to Cleary and played for it.

67′ TRY: Marion Seve scores for Melbourne

Melbourne centre Marion Seve has lost his protective goggle, but has scored a great try.

Right centre Nick Meaney made a linebreak to bust open the Panthers.

After an offload, there is a desperate tackle to stop Melbourne. It’s the last tackle, and Melbourne passes to the left.

Seve brushes off a tackle and ducks his head, going for the line.

Panthers come across in cover, but Seve gets the ball down before he goes into touch.

Meaney, with his fourth conversion attempt from the left touchline, misses.

He has kicked one goal from four attempts.

The Panthers were gifted a penalty, which gave them a chance at Melbourne’s goal line.

Edwards gives a short ball to Sorensen, who charges to the goal line, is tackled by Cam Munster and Marion Seve, but reaches out to score.

    Nathan Cleary kicks the goal.

58′ TRY: Storm take the lead with Joe Chan try

Melbourne interchange Joe Chan scores, but gives a lot of credit to Xavier Coates.

Tyran Wishart kicked for the left corner and Coates leapt into the air.

He gets over the top of Panther Brian To’o, taps the footy back to Chan, who catches the footy and scores.

Nick Meaney misses the kick. He is one of three at goal tonight.
