How To Find Clarity In Business And Build What Fits You

Discover how to find clarity and build a business that truly fits your God-given strengths, your faith, and the life you want to live.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a business expert’s proven system and wondering why it feels so wrong for you, let me tell you something important -> You are not broken.

You are not doing it wrong. The problem is not you.

The problem is that you are trying to wear someone else’s business like it is a one-size-fits-all outfit, and that approach never works.

We should know. We’ve tried to be all kinds of people over the years!

We tried to be just like Amy Porterfield. We put on her business model like it was a new dress, and it just did not fit.

Then we tried that Pinterest expert’s approach, and that did not work either.

Then the podcast guru’s system didn’t fit well either.

We spent so much time feeling guilty when I strayed from their step-by-step plans. We were convinced we were failing because their methods did not feel right for us.

Here is what we finally realized. Your business is not supposed to look like anyone else’s.

That discomfort you feel is not failure. It is a nudge to let you know that there is a better way, a path that actually fits your unique strengths and experiences.

The Cookie-Cutter Trap That Keeps You Stuck

Let’s talk about why we fall into this trap of copying other people’s businesses.

We see these experts with their beautiful systems and think if we just follow their exact steps, we will get their results.

But here is the truth we learned the hard way. Those experts give you five-step systems, and we feel guilty if we stray from step three. We think we must be doing this wrong.

But the most important lesson we learned was giving ourselves permission not to be a cookie-cutter copycat version of whatever that expert said to do.

We had to try all kinds of different approaches to figure out what was effective for our businesses and felt authentic.

We looked for places where we saw real results, what actually resonated with our audiences, and what aligned with our unique values and personalities.

Some of it stuck. Some of it felt icky or just was not fully aligned with who we are. And that was okay.

The key was giving ourselves permission to let some things stick and let some things go. That was revolutionary in our business building.

Getting Real About What You Actually Want

A hand reaching toward the bright sun in a clear blue sky, with sunlight shining between the fingers, symbolizing clarity, hope, and guidance.

Now, here is where it gets really interesting. When we talk about finding clarity in business, most of us immediately think about business models and revenue streams and those are importat, but that is not always the best place to start.

It’s important to be honest about what we actually want from our lives, as a whole.

Laurie will never forget when she was working with a coach who asked her a simple question. She asked, What do you actually dream for yourself?

Without even thinking, she launched into this speech about how she wanted to work eight to ten hours a day, five days a week. She listened patiently and then asked if she really wanted to work that many hours.

The coach’s question stopped her cold. She realized she was describing what she thought a successful business owner should do, not what she actually wanted.

Just last week, Laurie caught herself feeling guilty for not working an eight-hour day. Then she remembered – she is her own boss. She does not have to make herself feel bad because she took a call with her daughter or met her pastor for coffee. This is the life she wants to be living.

This is the foundation of building a business that fits you. It is understanding that your business should support your life, not consume it.

We have been sold this lie that we have to sacrifice now for success later, but that is not true. You can live the life you want now while building your business.

Listening for God’s Voice in Your Business

Clarity does not come from hustle alone. As Christian women, we believe God cares about the details of our lives and our work. That means finding a business that fits is not just a strategic process. It is a spiritual one.

Sometimes this looks like asking God in prayer what He wants you to notice. Other times it is paying attention to how your heart responds. Do you feel a sense of peace and alignment in a certain direction? Or does it bring a constant sense of dread?

Think of David pouring out every emotion in the Psalms, or Paul learning to be content in all circumstances. They sought clarity not by copying others, but by seeking God’s wisdom.

Their stories remind us that God does not call us to fit into someone else’s mold. He calls us to learn from others and be faithful with the unique gifts and calling He has given us.

When you invite Him into your decisions, clarity shifts from something you force to something you receive. It becomes less about striving and more about stewarding the path He is revealing.

Practical Questions to Discover Your Path

So how do you actually figure out what you want? It starts with asking yourself better questions.

When I was stuck in that cycle of trying to be like everyone else, these are the questions that helped me find my way back to myself.

    • What are you passionate about? What makes your heart come alive when you talk about it?
    • What do you genuinely enjoy doing that does not feel like draining work?
    • What are you naturally good at? Think about the things that come easily to you.
    • What impact do you want to make on the people you serve?

Your answers to these questions are not just business data. They are clues leading you to build the unique business God is guiding you to build. They help you paint a picture of what could be without the shame of thinking you should want what others want or you should look like that person.

Maybe you do not want to grow bigger. Maybe you do not want to work more hours even when you are earning more money. And you know what? That is perfectly okay. Your version of success does not have to look like anyone else’s.

The Try It On Approach to Business Building

One of the most freeing realizations I had was that finding clarity often comes through action, not just thinking. We call this the throw spaghetti at the wall method. You try different things and see what sticks.

This looks like testing small ideas before going all-in. Maybe you create a simple digital product before building a full course. Perhaps you offer a new service to a few trusted clients first. You are not being flaky or indecisive.

You are being wise enough to test and learn what actually fits you and your people.

Each experiment teaches you something valuable. Some things will resonate deeply with your soul and your audience. Others will fall flat. Both outcomes are gifts because they move you closer to understanding what you are truly called to build.

The goal is not to have everything figured out before you start. The goal is to start and figure things out as you go. Hold lightly to what does not work and double down on what does.

What Happens When You Embrace Your Uniqueness

When you stop trying to fit into someone else’s business mold, something beautiful happens. You begin to notice the unique ways God wired you and how those qualities can serve others in ways no one else can.

Maybe you are like me (Becky). You thrive on consistency and predictable schedules. You love knowing what is coming, having boxes and structure in your calendar, with spaces carved out for creativity.

Or maybe you are more like Laurie and you need variety, spontaneity, and creative freedom every day.

Neither approach is wrong. Both are needed.

The world does not need another carbon copy of someone who is already successful. The world needs the unique business only you can build with your specific gifts, personality, and calling.

Your Invitation to Build A Business Something That Fits

You have permission to want what you actually want. You have permission to let go of strategies that feel icky or misaligned. You have permission to build a business that supports the life you want to live now, not just someday in the future.

Your business should fit your life (your actual real life, not the life you think you should be living).

Stop trying to fit into someone else’s business mold. God did not call you to build a replica. He called you to build something only you can build. Your unique combination of passions, strengths, and calling is exactly what someone out there needs.

Take that first step today. Ask yourself one honest question about what you really want.

Your answer might just be the beginning of the business you were always meant to build. It will be one that does not just look successful from the outside, but feels like coming home to yourself every single day.
