Take rosemary oils, for example. It’s all-naturél and does wonders for your hair and scalp. Pair it with castor oil, a tried-and-true remedy that’s been used for generations on everything from skin to hair, and you’ve got a powerful combo for long, shiny locks.

Today, we’re sharing a simple DIY natural hair treatment using both rosemary and castor oil. It’s easy to make at home and perfect for nourishing, strengthening, and encouraging thicker, healthier hair.

We’re big fans of castor oil, and for good reason. You can use castor oil for lymph nodes, to make your brows thicker, fuller, and longer, and, as an overnight detox—check out our post “Benefits of Castor Oil Patches” for more information on that.

After realizing how powerful of an oil it is, we had to try it on our scalp and hair, too. And as we looked into the idea further, we found that rosemary oil pairs perfectly with castor oil to boost hair growth totally naturally.

Here’s how you can make your own castor and rosemary oil hair treatment:

Is Castor and Rosemary Oil Good for Hair?

Yes! There are so many rosemary and castor oil benefits for your hair. The nutrients in the oil can increase blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth. At the same time, castor oil’s antimicrobial properties can keep your scalp healthy, reducing dandruff and scalp infections.

Beyond stimulating hair growth, the combination of rosemary and castor oils can also strengthen and moisturize brittle and dry hair. Their rich, hydrating consistency helps add shine and reduce frizz by smoothing those hair cuticles.

Basically, castor oil + rosemary oil = all your hair goals.

How to Make Rosemary and Castor Oil for Hair Growth

    Ingredients:

    2 tablespoons cold-pressed castor oil

1 tablespoon jojoba oil, coconut oil, or other carrier oil

    5-10 drops rosemary essential oil

    Instructions:

    Step 1: Mix the oils.

In a small glass or ceramic bowl, combine the castor oil, carrier oil, and rosemary essential oil.

    Step 2: Warm the mixture.

Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water. Then, place the bowl in the warm water (don’t let any spill over the top). Let it sit for a few minutes to warm the oils.

The warmth from the mixture helps your pores open up and absorb more of the oil. Make sure you don’t microwave it though, because it can reduce the potency and degrade the beneficial nutrients.

Step 3: Apply to scalp and hair.

Wet your scalp and then use your fingertips to apply the oil blend directly onto your scalp, section by section. Massage the oil gently into your skin with your fingers or a scalp massager for 3-5 minutes. (Use code TSC25 for 25% off the Pellequr scalp massager.)

Then, pour a dime-sized amount of oil into your palm and rub your hands together to warm it up. Starting from the mid-lengths, work your way down to the ends, smoothing the oil evenly through your hair. Repeat until all strands are lightly coated.

    Step 4: Let it sit.

Let the oil sit on your hair for 30 minutes to 2 hours. You could even let it sit overnight for a deep treatment, too. Just make sure to use a shower cap to protect your bedding.

    Step 5: Rinse and wash.

Make sure to shampoo thoroughly—we even recommend shampooing twice to remove all the oil and buildup. Then, condition your hair as usual for soft, refreshed strands.

How to Use Rosemary and Castor Oil for Hair Growth

Always do a patch test first.

Any time you’re using a new product or DIY treatment on your skin or hair, do a patch test. This helps ensure that you aren’t allergic or sensitive to the ingredients in any way.

Apply a small amount to your skin and check for redness, itching, or irritation. If you don’t experience any negative reactions, go ahead and massage it onto your scalp.

Use a gentle shampoo to prevent stripping moisture away.

The whole point of the rosemary and castor oil treatment is to strengthen, hydrate, and grow hair, right? Of course you want to wash all the excess oil away so your hair isn’t greasy. But you also don’t want to strip away all of that moisture you just added in, either.

So, skip the clarifying shampoo. Instead, use a gentle, moisturizing shampoo that rinses out the oil without drying out your hair. Want some more tips on finding that perfect balance? Check out this blog post.

Apply it to your brows, too.

We’d never forget ‌those brows. Castor oil and rosemary are AMAZING for getting thicker, longer, and fuller brows. You can use the same oil blend and apply it with a clean mascara wand for easy, precise application.

If DIY isn’t your thing, try The Skinny Confidential Brow Peptide. It’s a non-toxic eyebrow serum made with castor oil used to grow your brows and style them to perfection. Even better? It’s perfect for mid-day brow touch-ups. Take Lauryn’s advice and always brush your eyebrows up for a youthful, refreshed look.

    Focus on problem areas.

Just like our skin, different areas of your scalp and hair can have different needs. Some spots may grow thick and healthy, while others may be thinning and need a little extra love. You might notice the hair at the top of your head gets oily, while the ends remain dry. Totally normal, but can be super frustrating.

But, because of this, it’s best to apply more oil to the problem areas that need extra care, without overloading the healthier parts. This way, you’re essentially creating a targeted, structured routine. You can treat thinning or dry spots effectively while keeping the rest of your hair totally balanced—key for getting healthy, lustrous hair.

Do the oil treatments just 2-3 times a week.

Too much oil can clog hair follicles and cause irritation, so you don’t want to overdo it. Apply your oil treatment 2-3 times a week for the best results. You’ll hydrate your hair, soothe your scalp, and promote growth without adverse effects like buildup, greasiness, or itchiness.

If you have gone a little overboard on the oil, we know the perfect quick fix for that—a scalp massager! They’re not just great for promoting hair growth and massaging hair follicles. When used frequently, a scalp massager also removes dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. For more on how to use a scalp massager, read this post.

Be patient when waiting for results.

Hair growth is naturally a slow process. It’s a little like watching paint dry, so don’t expect to see big changes overnight.

Even though this DIY hair treatment is powerful, it takes time for the nutrients to stimulate your hair follicles and for new growth to appear. Just be patient, and before long, you’ll notice thicker, stronger, healthier hair.
