Bob Odenkirk wants to do more action movies

Bob Odenkirk may have once seemed like an odd choice for an action star, but the actor proved that he has that John Wick spirit with Nobody. The action thriller found Odenkirk starring as Hutch Mansell, “an unassuming family man who cowers and folds during a home invasion. His post-traumatic shame disorder reignites a long-cooled fire within, and he summons a secret lethal skill set for a revenge mission, only to see it backfire spectacularly and put his family in greater jeopardy.” A sequel is in development, but Odenkirk is hungry for more action.

While speaking at the Venice Film Festival (via Deadline), Bob Odenkirk said he definitely “wants to do more action” in the future.

I was very surprised by Nobody. I had initiated that project because I had a feeling that the character I was developing in Better Call Saul was the kind of character you see in an action film. He has earnest desires and he was willing to sacrifice himself…I still train multiple times a week and if I get my way you’re going to see me doing more action. I found the action sequences a great deal of fun and close to doing sketch comedy…I love the early Jackie Chan films which had humour in them. I’d like to get that in future.

The Nobody sequel is currently being scripted, and producer David Leitch told Collider last month that everyone is excited to return. “Everyone involved is like, ‘Full steam ahead,’” Leitch said. “We are in the script process, and I think we had so much fun making that. Kelly and I had a blast, the actors had a blast, the studio loved the results, and it’s happening. I mean, I think it’s happening as fast as we can make it happen.” Before Bob Odenkirk returns to the realm of action, he will be starring in his next series for AMC now that Better Call Saul has concluded. Straight Man, based on the novel by Richard Russo, will find Odenkirk starring as William Henry Devereaux Jr., the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt who is going through a midlife crisis.
