Aberdeen loss ‘unfortunate’ says Hamilton head coach after close SWPL 1 affair

Hamilton Women’s head coach Gary Doctor says his side need to retain their confidence after ending 2021 with a 2-1 SWPL 1 loss to Aberdeen.

Josephine Giard’s goal wasn’t enough to prevent Accies from slipping to a costly defeat after a double from Aberdeen star Bayley Hutchison sealed a Dons victory.

It was bottom versus second bottom but Doctor’s side remain in 10th and three points from safety, Partick Thistle dropping into ninth.

The winter break will now commence, meaning Hamilton don’t return to action until January against Glasgow City.

Doctor said: “I think we were a bit unfortunate again as it was a close game. I think we have been doing fairly well in games and it’s a competitive league. It’s small margins at both ends of the pitch which are deciding these games.

“Aberdeen are a good team and we gave them too much of a head start. I think overall we knew what we were walking into this season but I can’t ask more from the players in terms of their effort.

“It’s just one of these things and phases you can go through. We are suffering from a bit of confidence. There’s been games where we’ve been close or competitive and not quite taken the result.

“That can chip away at confidence. Sunday’s game there, I thought we started well and had a few chances around the box. Then they turned round the back of us and put it over the top of us.

“It dented the players’ confidence.”
