Winter is officially here and that means layers are too. There’s nothing I hate more than being freezing cold (or burning hot), so when it comes to winter coats, I have a list of high demands. Not only do I want to be warm and comfortable, but I don’t like to sacrifice warmth for style. And I like to have different coats for different occasions so that my outfits feel “complete” rather than wearing the same puffer coat every single day.

Each year growing up, my mom made it a tradition for us to pick out a new coat (almost always from Lands End). There was something so fun about having a new coat for the winter– almost like buying school supplies at the start of the year. This year, I also found a handful of winter coats from Lands’ End which I’ve included in this post, along with some other cute brands.

In this post, I’m sharing my favorite winter coats for every kind of occasion (just one winter coat won’t cut it, sorry!).

    My Favorite Winter Coats

Here’s my curated list of stylish (and practical) winter coats to keep you warm this winter.

    Best Overall Winter Coat

Lands’ End Women’s Down Winter Coat

The coat that I love the most every winter is the Lands’ End Women’s Down Winter Coat. It’s a mid-length (it hits around mid-thigh) with 600-fill power down and a great-fitting three-piece hood. I also love the fur lining on the hood for style points. The version I have has black fur, but the one I’m linking has brown fur – which I actually think looks even better!

I also give this coat the award for the most affordable and the most comfortable winter coat. It’s lightweight but warm, not fussy or bulky, and works well with most of my clothes (it was the only coat I took to Utah). It’s proof that Lands’ End coats can hold their own against any luxury brand.

I also included this coat in my round up of the coolest puffer coats.

    Best Long Winter Coat

    Abercrombie Wool-Blend Tailored Topcoat

I recently got this Abercrombie Wool-Blend Tailored Topcoat, which is such a beautiful, classic piece. I wanted a long, camel-colored coat to wear with dresses or for more dressed-up occasions, and this one is it. The fit is polished but not stiff, and the wool-blend fabric feels like something you’d find in a true investment winter coat. It’s timeless and versatile – perfect for church, luncheons, or even winter weddings.

    Best Cropped Winter Coat

    Alo Gold Rush Puffer

How fun and chic is the Alo Gold Rush Puffer? It’s sleek, sporty, and ultra-warm without feeling bulky – the perfect coat to throw on with leggings, joggers, or denim for errands or travel days. It’s one of those stylish winter coats that manages to be both functional and on-trend. This coat is definitely a favorite for casual days.

    Best Affordable Winter Coat

Lands’ End Women’s Down Winter Coat

Once again, the Lands’ End Women’s Down Winter Coat takes the crown for the best affordable option. The quality for the price can’t be beat, and with Lands’ End coats going on sale regularly, you can often grab this one for around $150. It’s proof that you don’t need to splurge to get a warm winter coat that lasts.

    Best Toggle Coat

    L.L. Bean Wool Duffle Jacket

The Wool Duffle Jacket from L.L. Bean takes the cake for the best toggle coat this winter. I got this in navy and in a more cropped length (which unfortunately is no longer available). It has a somewhat boxy fit and looks great styled with dresses and denim. This Duffle Coat from Everlane is the same length and fit as the one I’m pictured in – it hits just above or at the hip, and it’s not itchy even though it’s made of wool.

It also has a full zipper to go along with the toggle closures, so if you want to be extra warm, you can zip up.

    Best Peacoat

Anthropologie Maeve Cropped Swingy Wool-Blend Peacoat

The Maeve Cropped Swingy Wool-Blend Peacoat from Anthropologie coat is a modern twist on the classic peacoat. It has that timeless double-breasted structure but with a cropped, swingy silhouette that feels fresh and feminine. It’s great for layering over turtlenecks or dresses and makes a lovely investment winter coat that you’ll wear for years.

If you prefer something more classic, this Classic Lambswool Peacoat from L.L.Bean is what I’d recommend because it’s high quality and very timeless.

    Best Trench Coat

Ralph Lauren Trench Coat (from Macy’s)

It took me a while to find a trench coat I really love, but the Ralph Lauren Belted Trench Coat is exactly what I was looking for and more. I love the tailored lines, belted waist, and utilitarian details like the storm flap and epaulets. It’s the kind of coat that never goes out of style – clean, sophisticated, and endlessly wearable (and also water-resistant). If you’ve been thinking about investing in a trench, this is a beautiful one to start with. Plus, it comes in petite sizes too (finally!).

    Best Fur Coat

    Anthropologie Cropped Faux-Fur Coat

A fur coat is an absolute must for anything festive and fun during the colder months – from holiday parties to winter date nights. The one I’m wearing here is sadly sold out, but this Anthropologie Cropped Faux-Fur Coat is the perfect alternative. It has that luxe, plush texture that elevates any outfit, whether you’re wearing it over a dress or denim and boots.

If you prefer something with a slightly edgier vibe, the BlankNYC Gala Affair Faux Fur Crop Jacket from Anthropologie is another beautiful option. It has the same glam feel with a modern twist and looks just as chic dressed up or down.

Either way, a fur coat is one of those pieces that makes winter dressing so much more fun – a true stylish winter coat that you’ll reach for all season long.

    Most Fun Winter Coat

Nordstrom Bernardo Faux Shearling Wrap Coat

If you’re looking for something playful and cozy, this BERNARDO Faux Shearling Wrap Coat from Nordstrom is such a fun find. It’s soft, plush, and has a chic wrap silhouette that feels both elevated and effortless. I love that it’s a little different from your typical puffer or trench – but it’ll still make even jeans and a tee look put-together.

What is the warmest material for a winter coat?

When it comes to warmth, materials matter. Down is the gold standard for insulation, trapping heat effectively without adding bulk. Wool is another excellent option, especially in long coats. Synthetic materials like Thinsulate and fleece are great for layering, offering warmth and lightweight comfort.

I highly recommend the Lands’ End Women’s Down Winter Coat for warmth since it worked so well for me in Utah. If you’re going in sub-zero temps, you’ll probably want to consider a higher-quality one designed for frigid temps, like the Canada Goose Down Parka or the Clair Quilted Coat.

Which type of jacket is best for winter?

The best winter jackets depend on your needs. For extreme cold, a down parka with a hood provides maximum warmth. For milder climates, wool coats or lightweight puffers are versatile options. I’ve owned a lot of different winter coats over the years, and I tend to gravitate toward coats that cover my bum since they add more warmth.

What kind of coat makes you look thinner?

Coats with a defined waist, like belted styles or tailored fits, create a slimming effect. A-line shapes and vertical seams also elongate the silhouette. Avoid overly bulky fabrics if you’re aiming for a sleeker look. I also find that black coats are always the most slimming option.

What is the warmest brand of winter coats?

Canada Goose and Patagonia are renowned for their warm winter jackets. Both brands use high-quality materials like down and water-resistant shells, making them favorites for cold climates. But both brands are also known for being pricey. Lands’ End has actually really surprised and impressed me this year for the quality and price.

    Other Women’s Coats I Like

No matter your style or winter needs, there’s a coat that fits perfectly into your wardrobe. Stay warm, look stylish, and embrace the season with confidence!
