Whip up a batch of this yummy homemade fajita seasoning recipe for amazing chicken fajitas, veggies, or rice! This fajita spice blend recipe is packed with flavor using spices you likely already have in your kitchen.
Making your own spice blends is one of the easiest ways to save money on groceries (which we’re all trying to do these days!) and avoid the unhealthy filler ingredients commonly found in store-bought spice mixes.
In fact, I love making my own seasoning blends (like Homemade Taco Seasoning, Homemade Chili Seasoning, and Homemade Blackened Seasoning) so much that I haven’t purchased any store-bought mixes in well over 10 years!
Let me tell you – the sky’s the limit on all the seasonings you can make yourself, and that’s why I especially LOVE this homemade fajita seasoning.
HOMEMADE FAJITA SEASONING RECIPE INGREDIENTS
This recipe for fajitas seasoning mix is the perfect combination of staple spices you likely already have in the pantry. Skip the store-bought packet and mix these together yourself!
- Chili Powder. Many store-bought chili powders contain additives and sodium, so be sure to read the ingredient label.
- Ground Cumin. This adds an earthy, warm flavor to the fajita seasoning mix.
- Paprika. Sweet paprika is what you usually find in supermarkets, but if you crave a smoky flavor, substitute smoked paprika.
- Granulated Sugar (optional). Sugar is traditionally used to caramelize the fajita meat and veggies, but this is completely optional. Brown sugar is always a nice option.
- Garlic Powder. You can’t have fajitas without the flavor of garlic! Make sure it’s pure garlic powder, not garlic salt.
- Onion Powder. Most fajita recipes include sliced onions, but adding a bit of onion powder to the fajita spices as well really boosts the flavor.
- Cayenne Pepper. Here is where you get your heat! Adjust the cayenne to taste – I prefer ½ tsp cayenne for just a bit of kick.
- Salt. Also adjust your salt to taste – I like mine on the saltier side, so I use the full teaspoon.
Psst! Not all salts are made the same! I love Ava Jane’s Kitchen because it doesn’t have microplastics (gross, right?) and it’s SO GOOD! Plus, you can get a free 8oz. bag of sea salt (just pay shipping and handling!).
HOW TO MAKE FAJITA SPICE BLEND RECIPE
Step 1. Measure all of the fajita spices into a jar with at least ½ cup capacity.
Step 2. Shake well before using.
And that’s all there is to it!
Store homemade fajita seasoning with your other homemade spice mixes.
- This fajita spice blend recipe makes about ¼ cup, but you’ll want to use a jar with a ½ cup capacity for mixing and shaking. Alternatively, you can mix in a small bowl and transfer to an airtight container.
- I like to make bigger batches and store the extra in the spice cabinet!
- When making fajitas, use approximately 1 Tablespoon of seasoning per pound of meat, or more if desired.
- Feel free to increase the spice levels with a little extra cayenne!

FAJITA SEASONING MEXICAN SPICE FAQS
What is fajita seasoning made of?
This is a simple traditional fajita seasoning Mexican recipe – minus all of the fillers you’d find in expensive store-bought fajita seasoning mixes. It incorporates chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and optional sugar. Very simple, very flavorful, and nothing more!
What’s the difference between taco seasoning and fajita seasoning?
While they do use some of the same spices, fajita seasoning is usually a bit milder than taco seasoning, with a hint of sweetness (from the sugar used to caramelize the meats). Taco seasoning also includes black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes.
If a recipe calls for one packet of fajita seasoning, how much of the homemade mixture should I use?
A seasoning packet from the grocery store typically contains around 2-3 Tablespoons of chicken fajita seasoning. Start with 2 Tablespoons, and you can always add more!
