Because fall fashion doesn’t have to mean buying all new clothes.
There’s something magical about fall. The cooler temps. The layered looks. The cozy textures. It’s the season where clothes feel fun again. But you don’t need to overhaul your wardrobe just because the temperature dropped a bit.
These fall outfit ideas are made with staples most of us already have in our closets – or they’re worthy investments for a classic wardrobe if you don’t already have them. Think jeans, sweaters, blazers, dresses, ballet flats and loafers. It’s about putting together classic pieces in fresh combinations, with a few accessories to tie it all together (you can find ideas on what to wear under your blazer here). Whether you’re heading to preschool drop-off, a casual dinner, or just trying to look less tired at Target, these outfits check all the boxes. Easy. Polished. Practical.
Fall Outfit Ideas
1. Jeans + Button Down + Sweater + Booties
This is fall layering at its best and one of my most-worn outfits. Start with a crisp white button down (I love one with a slightly oversized, cropped fit like this button-down from Frank & Eileen or the classic boyfriend button down from Rochelle Behrens). Layer a neutral crewneck or v-neck sweater over the top. Finish with slim or straight-leg jeans and ankle booties (these Margaux suede booties are by far my most-worn pair).
Style tip: A belt pulls it all together, and this look layers well with a trench coat if it’s chilly. Add gold jewelry to make it look extra polished.
2. Denim Dress + Blazer + Loafers
Denim dresses are perfect for fall since they have a heavier weight than the flowy dresses of warmer months, and this combo is one of my favorite ways to make a denim dress feel elevated. Toss on a structured blazer – camel or navy works beautifully – then slip on some loafers. (You can even wear socks with loafers if you want a little extra warmth.)
I own two denim dresses – one is pricey from Frame with puff sleeves and bold collar and another is a denim dress with pockets Amazon.
Style tip: Roll the sleeves of your blazer for a more relaxed feel. A leather crossbody or top-handle bag completes the look. (Here are more tips to style denim dresses.)
3. Wide Leg Jeans + Long Sleeve Polo + Mary Janes
Wide leg jeans are having a moment and they’re surprisingly versatile. (My current favorite wide leg jeans are the Frame Palazzo’s that are also petite friendly). Pair them with a long-sleeve polo or fitted knit and finish with flat Mary Janes. You’ll want your jeans to skim the ground or hit above your ankle for this look. (See more tips for styling wide-leg jeans here.)
Style tip: Keep proportions balanced. A good rule of thumb to look polished and not sloppy when wearing wide leg jeans, is to tuck in your top and define your waist with a belt.
4. Mini Dress with Loafers & Socks
This one’s playful but still wearable. A structured mini dress (nothing too frilly) with a pair of loafers and scrunched socks like these gives off just the right amount of prep. (If preppy is your style, read this post too!)
A polo shirt dress works perfectly or the Callahan Shirt Dress from Tuckernuck works beautifully too. A denim dress is perfect for this as well.
Style tip: Choose neutrals or earthy tones to keep it from feeling too “schoolgirl” and add a trench for warmth.
5. Maxi Dress + Cardigan with Ballet Flats
When you don’t want to wear pants (hi, me every Monday), go for a maxi dress layered with a soft cardigan and simple ballet flats. This is also an easy way to take a summer staple and make it work for fall by adding a layer and swapping sandals for closed-toe flats.
You can never go wrong with a Hill House dress (here’s why), and I just got this fall maxi from Hill House that is ideal for family photos too.
Style tip: Cinch the waist with a belt if your dress needs more shape. Gold hoops and a leather bag make this look feel pulled together fast.
6. Jeans + T-shirt + Scarf + Ballet Flats
This might be the easiest outfit on the list. A basic tee, great jeans, and a scarf tied around your neck or in your hair instantly make it feel like a look. My favorite white tee is this two pack from Amazon and my favorite striped tee is this one from Frame or this boxier tee from Splendid.
Style tip: Stick to a neutral color palette like ivory, taupe, soft grey – it keeps it polished. Ballet flats or loafers keep it classic and elevated, but white sneakers would work too if you need something to chase kids. (These are the best white sneakers.)
7. Straight Leg Jeans + Sweatshirt + White Sneakers
This barely needs its own section but I think the jeans and sweatshirt and shoes matter. A great-fitting pair of straight jeans, a soft oversized sweatshirt (this under $50 Le Weekend one from Nordstrom is great), and clean white sneakers make this look intentional, not lazy.
Style tip: Tuck the front of the sweatshirt to define the waist if the sweater is massive and add a crossbody bag or oversized tote. Throw on a trench or wool coat if it’s cold out.
8. Trouser Shorts with Sweater, Hat & Mesh Ballet Flats
Fall isn’t that cold in the South. Shorts can totally still work, especially if they’re tailored trouser shorts. Pair with a lightweight sweater, neutral ball cap (here are all my favorite hats), and ballet flats.
I love these A.Putnam trouser shorts and own them in three colorways. They’re an investment but if you like classic style, you cannot go wrong with them. They’re beautiful and fit like a dream. (If you’re a golfer, you need those shorts in your closet no matter what. Here are more cute golf outfits.)
Style tip: Tuck your sweater slightly and wear with no-show socks. Perfect for those weird in-between weather days.
9. Trouser Pants with Sleeveless Turtleneck and Block Heels
This is your work (or work conference) outfit. Sleek trousers, a sleeveless turtleneck and block heels. I’ve been looking for trousers for months and landed on these trouser pants from Ann Taylor that I just ordered (they come in petite and regular lengths). A sleeveless turtleneck is an item I have in my closet every fall and winter and it gets some of the most wear out of anything since it’s so versatile and classy.
Style tip: Layer a blazer or longline cardigan over the top if needed. Gold jewelry, a watch, and a swipe of lipstick dress it up.
10. Sweater Dress with Knee High Boots
Effortless but chic. Always. A knit sweater dress paired with tall suede boots like these is one of those combos that works every fall. I own this Tuckernuck sweater dress in two colors and have worn both of them nonstop in the fall and winter for three years straight. It fits beautifully on every size and shape, and it never goes out of style.
Style tip: Look for dresses that skim the body without clinging and add a belt if you want more shape. A structured bag makes this feel intentional without being fussy.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe to feel stylish this season. Start with what you already own. Jeans. A few good sweaters. Classic flats and boots. Layer in one or two new things if it makes sense. Fall style is about texture, comfort, and confidence.
And let’s be honest. If you have on clean jeans, real shoes, and your hair isn’t in a claw clip, that’s basically couture these days.
