How to Make Sweet Yeast Rolls with Cream Cheese & Candied Fruit

    Ingredients for the Sweet Dough

7 to 8 cups sifted flour
    1-3/4 cups milk
    ½ cups sugar
    2 large eggs
    ½ cups canola oil
    ½ cups warm water
1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
    1 teaspoon of sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons of vanilla

Ingredients for the Cheese-Candied Fruit Filling

    1/3 cup of sugar
    1 teaspoon of vanilla
5 oz. of cream cheese, softened or neufchatel cheese
    ½ cups candied cherries, halved

Ingredients for the Simple Confectioners’ Sugar Frosting

1 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
2-3 tablespoons milk (add gradually for desired consistency)
½ teaspoon vanilla or almond extract

    Instructions

    1. Test the water on the back of your wrist for the temperature. You want slightly warm water, but not hot like you would do for testing a baby bottle. When the temperature feels right, add the teaspoon of sugar to your water and yeast. The sugar will help the yeast to grow and bubble faster.
    2. Add seven cups of the sifted flour with all the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix and add the last cup of flour gradually until the dough doesn’t feel sticky. When it feels like the right consistency, take it to a floured surface and knead until it forms a soft dough ball.
    3. Place in a greased bowl and cover. Let it rise near a warm spot until doubled (about 1-1/2 to 2 hours).
    4. Punch down, then divide into two balls. Let rest 15 minutes more before rolling each piece on a lightly floured surface. You want to form two longer strips from them.

To Prepare the Cream Cheese-Candied Fruit Filling

    1. Just mix all the ingredients to combine and of spreading consistency.
    2. Brush with water and then spread half the cream cheese-candied fruit filling inside of each roll before rolling up, beginning with the narrow side.
    3. Pinch together so nothing leaks out, then place the seam side down on the greased pan.
    4. Cut slices and lay on greased baking pans (11-1/2″ x 8-1/2″). I get about 24 rolls, depending on the thickness that you slice.
    5. Let them rise and double for about 45-60 minutes.
    6. Bake at 375 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned.

To Prepare the Simple Confectioners’ Sugar Frosting

    1. While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting. In a small bowl, whisk together the sifted confectioners’ sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, a teaspoon at a time, if a thinner consistency is desired.
    2. Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool in the pan for about 5-10 minutes.
    3. Drizzle or spread the simple confectioners’ sugar frosting generously over the warm rolls.
    4. ENJOY!

    Tips for Success

Warmth is Key: Yeast loves warmth! Ensure your milk is the right temperature, and then transfer the covered bowl to a cozy spot for your dough to rise (like a slightly warm oven that’s been turned off).

Don’t Over-Flour: Add flour gradually when kneading. Too much flour will make your rolls tough. The dough should be soft and slightly tacky, but not sticky.

Sharp Knife for Cutting: A sharp knife or dental floss makes clean cuts, ensuring beautiful spirals.

Don’t Overbake: Keep an eye on the rolls; you want them golden, not dry.

    Serving Suggestions

These versatile rolls are wonderful on their own, but here are a few ideas to elevate your experience:

Breakfast or Brunch: Serve this delicious sweet yeast roll warm with a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of fresh orange juice.

Dessert: A perfect light dessert after a meal, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Afternoon Treat: Enjoy a homemade sweet roll with a cozy beverage for a delightful afternoon indulgence.

    Storage & Make-Ahead Tips

Storing Leftovers: Store cooled rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. For longer storage, refrigerate these dessert rolls for up to five days.
Reheating: Warm individual rolls in the microwave for 15-30 seconds, or in a preheated oven at 300 degrees for 5-10 minutes until heated through.+

    Variations to Try

Feel free to get creative with your fillings!

Nutty Twist: Add ½ cups chopped pecans or walnuts to the cream cheese filling. Besides how tasty, nuts provide wonderful health benefits!

Citrus Burst: Include some finely grated orange or lemon zest in the cream cheese filling for a brighter flavor.

Chocolate Lover’s Dream: Mix in ¼ cup mini chocolate chips with the candied fruit, or replace the candied fruit entirely with chocolate chips.

Different Frosting: Experiment with a cream cheese frosting (butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla) for a richer topping.

There you have it! This recipe for my sweet yeast rolls are a labor of love, but every bite is absolutely worth it. The soft dough, the creamy, fruity filling, and the sweet glaze create a symphony of flavors and textures that will have everyone asking for more.
