Live: Travis Head hits 50 as Australia fights back from top order collapse

Live updates: West Indies vs Australia, first Test day one

41st over: Joseph’s from both ends

The wicketless Alzari Joseph is back into the attack and his first one is well directed and spitting in at Webster off the pitch.

Another well directed one has Webster on the back foot and defending.

40th over continued: Joseph has two to come after wicket

Beau Webster is the new man to the crease.

And he’s back and defending straight away.

Webster’s off the mark with a drop and run single into the off-side.

The big Tasmanian will retain strike for the next over.

It’s well directed stuff from Joseph as Webster is forward for the next couple and not looking overly convincing as he pushes them away.

    OUT! KHAWAJA’S DONE FOR!

He rode his luck, he fought hard, but now he’s out.

Joseph drops a short one in and Khawaja is standing up and trying to pull it to the fence.

However, all he can get is a faint under edge and Shai Hope gobbles it up behind the stumps.

40th over: S. Joseph to continue

Khawaja is playing an attractive straight drive along the carpet, but Joseph is down and stopping it. No run.

The West Indies need something here.

Joseph brings back his length and Khawaja is back and defending. Good ball.

39th over: Chase to spin six down

And Khawaja is working one through the on-side for a single.

Head is backing away and trying to give himself some room to swat one through covers. But he can’t get enough on it and it’s no run.

A couple dots to end the over – just the one off it

38th over – Shamar Joseph carries on

Oh Usman, this is not great, a wild swing and he misses, the ball flying under his horizontal bat.

Down the leg side, there is a frantic call of “catch him” but it was nowhere near touching anything even tangentially related to Usman Khawaja.

That’s got up on the Aussie opener, his rips the bottom hand off the bat as he fends it down.

Outside off, left alone by Khawaja.

That’s drinks, Henry Hanson will take you to tea.

    Fifty for Travis Head

It’s come off 57 balls, his 19th Test match half century.

He’s been the lifeline for the Aussies again and has steered the ship into a safe port through the second part of the first session and into the second.

38th over – Shamar Joseph is back

Last over before drinks and he bowls a nice one to Head, who pushes it away for a single to mid on.

    37th over – Seales continues

EDGED! DROPPED! A diving effort in the gully from King now that was a tough chance but should have been taken at this level. Khawaja has been dropped on 6 and 45 now. It was a poor shot too, looking to guide it to third man and the ball just catching the edge of the bat near the shoulder. Rough debut for King.

He clips away for a single to backward square leg.

Head clips away to the same area for another single.

Outside off, swinging in a touch, left alone by Khawaja this time.

Khawaja has one that gets a bit large on him and he gets the hands off the bat and steps back, staring at the ball in near indignation.

Full, wide of off stump, Khawaja fends it to cover for no run.

    36th over – Greaves continues

Solid defence from Travis Head, no width there so he didn’t risk anything.

There is a kite in the sky somewhere behind the bowlers arm – Head isn’t a fan.

Head pulls hard through midwicket and it’s good fielding that denies him a boundary. He still gets two though out to the rope.

More solid defence from Head – there are so few places you can bowl to him when he’s in good touch. That’s one of the only places, on a length on off stump. Anything deviating from that it’s runs.

A touch of width and Head crushes it to backward point – there is a boundary rider there though too so it’s just a single.

Khawaja clips off his pads and it’s a single to backward square leg.

Head tries to cut to reach his fifty but he can’t time it and a  newly-placed catching point is there to field the ball.

    35th over – Seales continues

A single first up brings up the 100 for the Aussies.

It’s taken 205 balls – highlighting how hard it has been for the Aussies today.

Two slips and a gully, Khawaja fends to backward point and gully races around to save the single.

Wristy flick around the corner from Khawaja for a single to backward square leg.

Head cuts, there’s a fielder at deep point so it’s just a single.

    And Khawaja defends the last.

34th over – Greaves gets another

FOUR! Through the covers, smashed with aplomb by Head. What a lovely shot that was.

He moves to 42 from 47 balls.

A single moves him level with Khawaja on 43, but Khawaja has batted for 55 more balls than Head…

Outside off, left alone by Khawaja.

Solid defence from Khawaja now – he’s had his troubles has Usman, but he’s started to rediscover himself.

Another solid defensive stroke there from Khawaja.

BEATEN! Good ball, just a hint of movement and Khawaja was squared up and beaten all ends up.

    It’s not -2 in Barbados

Morning Simon & Henry. Just woken from a self-induced coma to a -2 degree early morning. I see that the selectors’ experiment with Konstas & Green hasn’t worked. Really questioning Bailey’s logic there.

    – Old timer

    Good morning Old timer.

We’re just being shown another azure blue shot of the sea, golden sands and more sun than you can wave a stick at.

    It’s sickening.

33rd over – Seales comes into the attack

Late cut from Travis Head but a nice stop at deep point makes it only a single.

Khawaja cuts now, stopped well at point for no run.

Khawaja’s patience has returned, a nice leave outside off.

Pushed to deep backward point, nicely played by Khawaja and he’ll take a couple of runs for it.

Full, wide, and well stopped in the covers.

    32nd over – Greaves continues

Oh, that’s an uncomfortable one, just in the midriff of Head.

Lovely drive from Head for no run, straight as a die and the ball cannons into the stumps at the non-strikers end, Khawaja leaping back into his ground. Greaves didn’t get a hand on that – he wasn’t far off though. Khawaja would not have got back in time.

Head punches the ball to mid on, but he doesn’t time it well.

EDGED! FOUR! Head leaps, cuts, the ball takes the edge and flies past second slip to the third man boundary. Very, very close.

Head clips a straight one to square leg for a single.

Solid defence from Khawaja to end the over.

31st over – Alzarri Joseph carries on

And Khawaja watches outside off as the ball sails wide.

BEATEN! Good pace at 141kph, good line and a very testing length has Khawaja prodding at that outside off.

Solid defence from Usman Khawaja there.

Khawaja pulls, a bit early on it and the ball trickles to mid on. No run.

Solid defence from Khawaja as Alzarri Joseph bowls a maiden.

    30th over – Graves continues

    (AP Photo)

EDGED! Four! Oh Travis Head was not in control of that ball, deep point was in place but the fielder couldn’t cut the ball off. Head looks satisfied with the result but he won’t be happy with the shot.

OUCH! Got him! Right on the hand and Head felt that a lot. Instantly ripping the hand off the bat and then removing the glove. He’s OK and sends the physio back up the steps into the pavilion. That did rip up out of nowhere.

He defends a fuller ball there – I wonder if Graves should gave tests those hands out again…

Down the leg side, he leaves alone.

BIG SHOUT! There was a sound as Head is strangled down the leg side but I think it was thigh pad.

Now Head takes a couple or runs into midwicket to end the over.

The leg-stump line worked nicely for the WIndies there.

    29th over – Alzarri Jeseph

BEATEN! That’s a ripper of a ball from Joseph! Round the wicket, swinging in, seaming away.

BEATEN! That’s fuller, Khawaja just couldn’t move his feet enough and just manages to avoid getting an edge on that.

Outside off, left alone by Khawaja this time.

EDGED! FOUR! Off the toe of the bat, between gully and slips for a boundary.

He leaves alone a ball that angles back in and goes very close to the stumps this time.

And now he defends the last.

    Great over from Alzarri Joseph.

Head riding in on his white horse

Travis to the rescue! – knock out a quick ton while Ussie gets his eye in…

    – Mike

He is remarkable – the number of times he has rescued this team is insane.
