7 Summer Wardrobe Staples Worth Investing In

We always talk about investment pieces for fall and winter—think premium denim, quality leather boots, and timeless coats—but summer clothes don’t usually get the same attention. Maybe it’s because the season feels shorter or the outfits are simpler, but there are still a few things I believe are worth spending a little more on for better quality.

Summer Wardrobe Staples Worth the Investment

Someone recently asked me what I consider good summer investment pieces, and it got me thinking about what I wear on repeat every year and the pieces that have really earned their spot in my closet. So with that in mind, here are seven summer wardrobe staples I think are worth investing in.

    #1. White Denim

MOTHER Weekender Flare (more sizes) (30) // cloth & stone tank (S) // Schutz slides (8) // similar bag // raffia hoops

I feel like I start every list of summer wardrobe staples with white denim—but there’s a reason for that! A great pair of white jeans is one of my most-worn warm-weather staples. They’re crisp, clean, and go with just about everything, from tanks and sandals to dressier blouses and heels.

In my experience, cheaper pairs often lose their shape or feel too thin, so it’s worth spending a little more on a pair that fits well and holds up all season long (and then some). Look for a thicker fabric with just enough stretch to keep them comfortable but polished.

Some of my favorites are the MOTHER Weekender Flare in Totally Innocent (wearing above) and the Good American Good Legs Straight Leg Jeans for an under-$100 option.

    #2. Neutral Handbag

Dragon Diffusion Santa Croce tote (also at Bloomingdale’s)

A quality bag has a way of elevating even the most budget-friendly outfit, so I think it’s worth investing in, especially if you tend to carry the same handbag every day. A woven bag is one of my favorite summer accessories because it adds texture and seasonal interest without feeling overly trendy.

I’m on my 3rd summer with the Dragon Diffusion tote. It can be hard to find, as it tends to go in and out of stock, but it’s the kind of classic piece you’ll have for years. The handwoven leather only gets better with age, and it instantly elevates my warm-weather outfits.

I also love styles that combine raffia or straw with leather details, like this rag & bone satchel or this AllSaints crossbody. They strike the perfect balance between polish and ease. Choose a neutral tone and a timeless shape, and you’ll find yourself reaching for it summer after summer.

    #3. Leather Sandals

Veronica Beard Via Slide (8) // PAIGE Anessa (29) // similar bag // old Faherty pullover // Tom Ford sunnies

My friend Jen at Everyday Style School is fond of saying, “Shoes define your style,” and that got me thinking… Especially in the summertime, when we’re wearing fewer layers and keeping outfits simple, quality sandals go a long way towards keeping our looks polished and put-together.

Think about it this way: it takes almost no effort to swap your plastic Old Navy flip-flops for a well-made leather pair, but it makes a huge difference in your overall look.

These luxe leather Veronica Beard slides with the gold-tone stud detail have been a workhorse in my wardrobe this spring and summer. I’ve worn them with everything from dresses to jeans, and they always look chic. Whether you go with a classic slide like that, an ankle-strap heel, or a minimalist toe-ring style, a neutral leather sandal adds just the right amount of polish without trying too hard.

    #4. Quality Sunglasses

Tom Ford sunnies // Dragon Diffusion Santa Croce tote (also at Bloomingdale’s) // AG denim jacket (S)

Good sunglasses not only protect your eyes, they also make a strong style statement and help pull an outfit together. Choose a pair that flatters your face and feels timeless. It’s fine to keep trends in mind, but ultimately, you want to feel confident in how they look on you.

I love a good cat-eye or oversized square frame, but smaller silhouettes are trending right now—and I’ve got a few on order because I realized I may be due for an update. I rounded up a few pairs I have my eye on below… pun totally intended.

    #5. Quality Swimwear (and a Chic Cover-Up)

Seafolly Essential Cover-Up (M) // beek flip flops (8) // rag & bone tote // YSL sunnies // Eric Javits straw hat (with SPF)

I’ve always invested in quality swimwear because the materials are thicker and more supportive than their cheaper counterparts, which means the fit is more flattering and the suit holds up better over time. Plus, when you find one you love, it’ll last you several seasons, saving you from the dreaded annual swimsuit search. Bonus!

Some of my go-to brands that I believe are worth the investment: Bleu Rod Beattie, Tommy Bahama, La Blanca, and Sea Level. I did a full Swimsuit Guide just a few weeks ago, so I won’t reinvent the wheel with a shopping widget here, but it’s worth checking out if you’re in the market.

And don’t overlook your cover-up! A stylish topper can instantly level up your poolside look and keep things classy, especially if you’re going from beach to lunch or walking through a resort. I love a lightweight shirtdress or gauzy tunic that offers just enough coverage without adding bulk.

    #6. Polished White Sneakers

    adidas Samba OG Sneaker (8)

Trendy sneaker styles come and go, but a sleek, low-profile leather sneaker in white or soft neutral tones is always a good investment. They’re comfortable, versatile, and work with everything from jeans and joggers to dresses and skirts—making them a go-to for summer travel, errands, or casual weekends.

These adidas Sambas are a new addition to my wardrobe, and I love how they add a sporty edge to everyday outfits. The mesh panels help keep them cool, and the slightly off-white shade feels softer (and more wearable) than bright white. A classic like this won’t go out of style anytime soon—and that’s exactly what makes it worth the investment.

    #7. Elevated Summer Dress

Ming Wang tank dress (S) // old Stuart Weitzman sandals (8) // YSL bag (budget option)

Everyone needs at least one go-to summer dress that can do a little bit of everything—the kind you can wear to brunch, throw a blazer over for a casual meeting, or dress up with heels and jewelry for dinner out.

This is my third season with this Ming Wang knit sheath, and I’ve worn it to birthday parties, graduation ceremonies, memorial services, and date night dinners. It’s my fallback when I’m not sure what to wear, and it always works. It was an investment when I bought it, but it has absolutely paid off. The fact that it’s still available years later is a testament to just how timeless this piece really is.

    Bonus: High-Quality Linen

J.Crew Cutaway vest top in linen (8) // Carolina flare pant in stretch linen blend (8) // Tory Burch wedge espadrilles (8) // Freja Caroline // Jenny Bird earrings & bracelet

When it comes to summer fabrics, linen is hard to beat. It’s breathable, lightweight, and has that effortlessly relaxed look—but not all linen is created equal. The higher-quality versions feel softer, drape better, and hold up better over time. Whether it’s a classic button-up, a great pair of tailored shorts or pants, a breezy dress, or a trending vest top, investing in well-made linen is always a good idea.

These are the summer wardrobe staples I’ve found to be the most versatile and hard-working—worth the extra investment for a quality piece. Of course, what’s worth splurging on will look a little different for everyone, but if you’re looking to build a warm-weather wardrobe that feels thoughtful and pulled together, this list is a great place to start.

What would you add? I’d love to hear your favorite summer wardrobe investment!
