The first predictions for the box-office performance of James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” are with analytics experts predicting to https://variety.com/vip/2022s-last-hopes-box-office-projections-for-avatar-2-black-adam-black-panther-2-1235388447/”>Variety that the sequel is on track to generate around $650 million at the domestic box-office.
In addition, it’s expected the film will earn a further $425 million and $214 million from video-on-demand and streaming platforms, respectively. The predictive data comes from content analytics firm Cinelytic which assessed the box-office for the rest of 2022.
To put those numbers in comparison, the original “Avatar” earned $772 million domestically during its theatrical run, whilst 2022’s highest-grossing domestic performer “Top Gun: Maverick” has raked in over $700 million domestically.
International figures, where the first “Avatar” made the early majority of its $2.79 billion haul, were not provided. “Avatar: The Way of Water” has the advantage of no real competition in December when it’s released, and no other major blockbusters in cinemas to challenge it until “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in mid-February.
The same study suggests “Black Adam” is tracking for a $328 million domestic gross, while “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” could rack up $423 million.
In other predictions, ailing exhibition giant Cineworld Group says (via https://deadline.com/2022/09/cineworld-group-interim-results-box-office-forecast-2025-1235131538/”>Deadline) that while cinema admissions had started to recover since the pandemic, it does not expect the box office to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2025.
