PVP is a pretty popular part of MMOs these days, and even if they don’t match up to the intense PVP games of the early/mid 2000s, online games with PVP are still pretty hot. There’s something exhilarating about jumping into battle against strangers and seeing just how solid your skills are (or how overpowered your build is). While I’m not as into PVP as I used to be, it can be fun now and again.
Below, we’re going to highlight our favorite picks for MMOs if you’re really into PVP. Some of the games are sweatier and try-hardier than others, but all of these games have solid MMO PVP, or the potential to be great if you’re really into them and dedicate serious hours.
7 MMOs to pick up and play if you’re into PVP
1) Dune Awakening

I know Dune Awakening had some pretty unpleasant griefers in its PVP in the earliest days of the MMO, but I do know that the developers have worked hard to deal with that over the past couple of months. Nonetheless, it is a deep, tactically sound MMO where you can get together with a guild, and take part in heated PVP in the endgame.
The whole endgame right now is just PVP, essentially. Whether you’re on the ground or in a vehicle, you can mix it up with a variety of other players in the sands of Arrakis. It doesn’t have the huge playerbase it did, but when the next DLC drops, I think there could be a pretty big resurgence.
2) Albion Online

Albion Online is mostly for the more hardcore PVP fan, because, like older games such as Ultima Online, Albion Online does feature full-loot PVP. It does have more casual, relaxed PVP as well, but the majority of the time, you’re risking your gear when you’re PVPing with other players.
As an MMO that touts itself as a heavy PVP game, it sure does have a ton of options. If you’re looking to fight other players and learn teamwork, you can take part in non-lethal Hellgates first. There’s also the various Arena types as well, giving you even more choices. I think, as far as online games go, if you’re looking for PVP action, it has the most options, and the most dedicated fanbase for it.
3) Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 may not have as intense a PVP community as it perhaps once did, but it’s still there, and there are still great options. You have World vs World, which is large-scale PVP, and smaller PVP matches in this MMO. You even have guild missions like PVP Stronghold, where players work as a guild and choose the PVP difficulty to try and defeat a pair of Stronghold Lords.
It’s PVP for people who like tactical objective gameplay, for the most part, but there are more deathmatch-style PVP options if that’s more your thing. The hardest part about GW2 PVP is learning when you can/cannot attack. There are quite a few ways to become invulnerable, and learning when it’s safe to attack and when to counterattack. It’s a game that has a pretty steep learning curve, but if you’re into that sweaty gameplay, it could be for you.
4) Black Desert Online

Pure PVP games very seldom work in North America. You either adapt or you close your doors. Black Desert Online used to be an open-world PVP game, but the griefers made it miserable, and ultimately, that was removed. There is PVP on the normal servers, but it’s not just “kill anyone, anywhere” like it used to be.
However, if you’re looking for that kind of thrill, there’s the Arsha server, but I don’t recommend it if you’re new to the game. Learn how the game plays, find your class/classes, and then jump into a PVP server for this MMO.
5) Throne and Liberty

Throne and Liberty is an interesting MMO with PVP, that’s for sure. It doesn’t have full-blown open-world PVP everywhere, all the time, as such. Instead, there are times where there are times when Peace Zones become PVP Zones (Conflict Zones), typically at night. This happens in the open-world dungeons too, where groups of players fight over raid boss kills, while also dealing with the actual enemy in the dungeon.
That’s what makes Throne and Liberty’s PVP pretty exciting, honestly. There’s also the 24 vs. 24 battlegrounds, as well as a rework of the Stonegard Siege Map, which both took place in the Solisium’s Awakening update. Throne and Liberty is a very PVP-heavy MMO, and I think whether you want some instanced, competitive fights, or want to stop other players from looting bosses, the choice is yours.
6) Eve Online

Eve Online is often looked at as “Spreadsheets the MMO”, and that’s fair. It also certainly has pretty intense PVP, but it really comes down to learning what your ship can and cannot do. It’s a game where you absolutely must learn from both your victories and defeats, if you want to stand a chance. You can try to PVP solo, but Faction Warfare’s where it’s at, if you ask me.
Of course, there are also going to be players out there multiboxing with several accounts, all flying their own ships so they can have an advantage over someone just flying one ship on its own, so that’s something to be aware of. Having friends who play this game I think will make it more fun as a PVP MMO, than going in alone. It’s definitely one of the more challenging games for online PVP.
7) World of Warcraft

While I do think WoW’s once-dominant PVP isn’t as strong as it used to be, it is home to some of the sweatiest, most hardcore PVPers in all of MMOs. It’s enough to have a global Arena tournament every year, after all. The Battleground stuff is mostly pretty relaxed, but when you get into Arena and Rated PVP, that’s when things get wild.
If you miss “the way it was back in the day”, you can also PVP on the various Classic servers, where the old balance patches still very much exist. You can also duel other players, and if you really want to risk it, you can duel players on the Hardcore servers. Whether you like small arena teams, or huge battlegrounds, there are options in WoW.
