The Little Book that Still Beats the Market is a guide to investing written by Joel Greenblatt. The book is divided into two parts: the first deals with how to make money in the stock market, and the second is a case study of how Greenblatt’s investment firm made over 30% annual returns for 20 years.

The book’s first part discusses value investing, special situations, and momentum investing. Greenblatt argues that these are the best strategies for making money in the stock market, and he provides detailed explanations of how each one works. He also includes several case studies to illustrate his points.

The book’s second part is a detailed account of how Greenblatt’s investment firm achieved such high returns. He discusses the firm’s investment philosophy, stock selection process, and risk management strategies. He also provides a list of recommended readings for further study.

A short but fascinating book looking at a specific system that the author declares and proves makes a regular profit.

The strategy Greenblatt shares is called the Magic Formula, based on two specific formulas: the Greenblatt ROC and the Greenblatt Earnings Yield.

I have backtested this system personally, and it works very well; it is a little high maintenance, but the lessons contained within the book are vital. It is also quite humorous, which is welcome in the dry world of investing—a great introduction to a stock market system from an investing legend.

Tip: If you want to implement the Magic Formula Strategy easily, it is included in Stock Rover’s Screening & Research Software (Visit Stock Rover for their Premium Plus Service)

A Man for All Markets is a compelling autobiography of renowned mathematician, investor, and gambler Edward O. Thorp. It chronicles his extraordinary life journey from childhood to adulthood as he navigates through some of the most complex financial markets around the world with remarkable success. Aptly titled, this book shows how Thorp has made investments in numerous stocks, bonds, and other financial assets while still managing to have an edge over the competition.

The book starts off with Thorp’s discussion of his early education at MIT and Princeton. He introduces us to key concepts like probability theory, game theory, and mathematical analysis that allowed him to identify exploitable patterns in everything from stock market trends to blackjack strategies. After learning these principles, he began to apply them to the stock markets, which eventually led him to launch a highly successful hedge fund in 1969.

Throughout the book, Thorp shares his insights on risk management, market behavior, and investment strategies that have enabled him to defy the odds time and time again. He also details some of his more notable successes, such as cashing out of the British Pound market before Black Wednesday or beating the house in Las Vegas casinos. Thorp’s story is an inspiring one that shows that with the right knowledge and a bit of risk-taking, it is possible to make money in any market.

One trader, for example, relies on technical analysis to make his trading decisions, while another focuses on fundamentals. Some traders use a combination of different techniques. However, what unites these traders is their dedication to their craft and willingness to learn from their mistakes.

A mixture of interviews with top traders on topics as far-reaching as trading Futures, Trading T-Bills, aggressive trading, stock selection, and psychology.

The books provide interesting insights into the minds of the traders interviewed and how they operate to achieve that profit. This is a classic book for an insight into the minds of Wall Street.

Positives: The focus is definitely on interviewing and insights into trading styles, which can make interesting reading and a break from too many number-crunching and technical analysis books.

Negatives: The people interviewed provide no practical insight into specific trading systems or actions, yet it is still a good read.

The book is a non-fiction work by John R. Talbott that exposes the lies often told on Wall Street. Talbott uses data and research to back up his points and provides readers with a guide on protecting themselves from financial ruin.

The 86 Biggest Lies on Wall Street is an informative and necessary read for anyone looking to safeguard their finances.

Talbott’s 86 biggest lies on Wall Street is a good book and an easy read. Some of the “lies” are difficult to agree with but, on the whole, a good insight into the views of Wall Street and the Government.

Positives: Although Talbott tells you what all the lies are, his versions of the truth are also debatable. A firm view against using technical analysis to analyze stocks and the market shows he is no expert in this area. However, these flaws in his reasoning are balanced with good and compelling arguments against many of the preconceptions we have today regarding governments, corporations, venture capital, and economics”.

Negatives: Some interesting arguments, especially if you have a left-wing conspiracy theory bent. Talbott holds some views that do not make sense. Also, I am sure he has made some of the lies just for effect.

With very diverse interviews this time, the book would appeal to investment firm insiders, but I feel this will have less value to the independent investor who focuses on the stock market.

Some of the key trading strategies that are discussed in the book include trend following, charting, and market timing. Many traders interviewed in the book use technical analysis to help them make trading decisions. They also use various other methods, such as gut instinct and computer models, to help them make informed decisions about when to enter and exit trades.

Overall, “The New Market Wizards” is a helpful guide for anyone interested in successfully learning how to trade the markets. The traders featured in the book share a wealth of information and offer valuable insights into their own trading strategies.

Positives: Interesting insights on Options Trading, Foreign Exchange (FOREX), and Automated Trading; this book provides insights outside the realms of the stock market.

Negatives: A rather weak trading psychology section at the end leaves one wondering what the point was.
